Uncertainty affects many decisions in the construction sector, mission of the course is to teach how to deal with it using Monte Carlo simulation method. Goal of the course is to give students some basic knowledge of how to do MC simulations using the software that suits best their specific research application, with a special attention to management questions.

 

MAIN SUBJECT AND PROGRAMME OF THE COURSE

1) Uncertainty and Monte Carlo simulation method (2+4 hrs)

-  Basics of probability theory;

-  concept of simulation;

-  random sampling;

2) Project management and uncertainty in time planning (4+4 hrs)

-  Cost and time planning

-  Graph theory and techniques

-  GANTT diagram

-  Monte Carlo simulation method for Graph and GANTT diagrams

3) Reliability assessment (4+4 hrs)

-  Reliability of simple systems

-  Monte Carlo simulation method for reliability and availability analyses

4) Uncertainty in service life prediction (2+2 hrs)

-  Service life prediction according to ISO 15686

-  Uncertainty in Factor method

-  Monte Carlo simulation method for performance analysis

5) Life Cycle Costs analysis (4+4 hrs)

-  LCC and WLC

-  Monte Carlo simulation method for LCC analysis

6) Site Safety planning (2+2 hrs)

-  Qualitative risk analysis in construction site safety

- Monte Carlo Simulation method for risk assessment

 

TEACHING ORGANIZATION

Course is organized in lectures, that aim to introduce students to the problem of input data uncertainty, with reference to the most common research topics in construction engineering, and laboratory, where students experience the application of what they learned in some case studies.
