098889 - DESIGNING INTERACTION
Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi
The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the design of the interaction with technological devices, including computers and smart phones, but mainly objects like robots, homes, cars, and anything that can exploit an effective, multi-modal interaction.
Technological devices are taking an important role in the life of millions of people, and the phenomenon will increase in the next years (disappearing computing, internet of things, etc.) The seamless and effective interaction with these devices is a key aspect for their success: people would like to have a simple and natural interaction with the technology that is pervading their lives. The course focuses on designing interaction between people and artificial entities such as programs, robots, smart buildings, vehicles, objects in general.
The course introduces the basic principles of interaction and communication, and presents techniques to design and implement effective interaction. Interface means will be presented, including sensors and actuators. Some case studies will be analyzed to put in evidence critical aspects. Possible solutions and improvements will be defined during the last lessons following a constructive approach. No specific technology will be exploited and no specific technological background is expected from the students.
The course will be arranged in half and full-days lessons, including interactive activity. The final project will be set up and discussed at the end of the course and then left to be developed in the next 2 months.
The teaching material consists of slides and links to papers, movies and multimedia materials.
Syllabus: human-human interaction principles, communicative acts, communication motivations, communication in the physical world: sensors and actuators, how to use (non-verbal) media (intensity, rythm, ...), what are emotions, emotional communication and emotion expression, user-centered design, design tools, design methodology, case studies: success and failure in the interaction.
Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione
Students are requested to develop a feasibility study by applying the techniques and the design methodologies presented in the course to design the interaction with a specific, multimedial object. Implementation is not needed, but students wishing to implement some nice object are welcome.
