Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The primary goal of the course is to finalize skills in dynamic representation of space at architecture and city scale, for urban design. In this sense, the activities of educational experimentation and research conducted by the Urban Simulation Laboratory "Fausto Curti" of the Politecnico di Milano, will be fundamental.

In terms of contents, the course aims at linking the themes of morphological analysis and urban design to those of perception and communication: it will expand the traditional principles of modeling towards a combined use of both physical and digital models, capable of restoring both conceptual and perceptual aspects of the urban environment. Lectures are complemented by practical experiments according to 'learn by doing' (Schön) principles. This approach will test the effectiveness of spatial models in the phases of analysis and design of architectural and urban projects, in order to study and verify morphological and spatial relationships. Moreover, it will investigate the relationship between plan structure and three-dimensional urban form from the perceptual point of view. Thus, for example, the view of public space and of the built environment from the street, enriched by the representation of some contextual conditions such as solar radiation at different stages of the day and seasons; this it will be addressed in a dynamic key aiming at reading the outcome linked to the everyday experience of the city.

In addition to providing the theoretical tools necessary for a conscious use of simulation techniques in the analytical and planning phase and in the sharing of the project, the course also aims at stimulating the development of a critical view of the simulations that describe urban projects across different media.

The course will develop a case study application that will be used to verify the theoretical background. The course will be therefore organized in lectures and laboratory activities (exercises). Collective periodic revisions will be made to show the progress of the course.

The course is strongly recommended to students attending Ic “Real Estate, Valuation and Project Impact Assessment” because offers the possibility to study complementary aspects of Urban Simulation.
