Detailed Program and expected learning outcomes

Aims

To develop competence concerning the following matters: i) strategic planning of manufacturing; ii) product life cycle management, from requirements definition to lifecycle costing; iii) manufacturing system design, from facility planning to the evaluation of performances of production logistics and of total cost of ownership; iv) technological choices for manufacturing automation in different system configurations; v) new trends concerning the ICT and work organization in manufacturing.

Program of lessons and practical classes

  1. Strategic planning of manufacturing: globalization of manufacturing; product life cycle and manufacturing system life cycle; value chains in manufacturing; business process modeling in manufacturing.
  1. Product lifecycle management: product requirements definition and identification (concept, modularity, make or buy, mass customization, ...), methods for integrated product-process-manufacturing system engineering (Quality Function Deployment, design for variety and modularity, …), Performance oriented methods (Design for X, Failure mode, effects and criticality analysis, Fault tree analysis, …), Product lifecycle cost (LCC) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), Cost reduction techniques (Design to Cost, Variety Reduction Program).
  2. Design of manufacturing systems: facility planning (location and layout), design and performance evaluation of production logistics through the use of factory physics (Little’s law, Logistic Operating Curves theory, Throughput Diagrams), design and performance evaluation based on the system reliability-availability analysis and the total cost of ownership, design and performance evaluation through the use of simulation tools (discrete event simulation, system dynamics).
  3. Automation in manufacturing systems: flexible manufacturing and assembly systems; off-line and on-line scheduling; real-time monitoring and control; manufacturing execution system; selection of the type of technology and level of automation.
  4. New trends in manufacturing: role of ICT in manufacturing; fragmented manufacturing; smart manufacturing; human resource, skill valorisation and training.

The course consists of lectures, exercises, and tutorials; the tutorials will be carried on in groups of students to actively train on case based reasoning and problem solving.

Assessment

The assessment consists of a written examination and an oral examination, including the content of lectures, exercises, and tutorials.
