Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

This course provides basic knowledge of main types of technical systems and design methods for their appropriate integration into buildings. The essential aspects related to system designing for thermal (heating and cooling) and acoustic comfort in built environment will be examined. Special emphasis will be given on the design with local climates, rational use of energy, renewable energy and environmental impact in the design selection. The course is based on broad approach to the development of sustainable routes to the generation and supply of energy within which renewable and low energy technologies are the key themes.

During the course, students are supposed to use the specific tools for the design selection and performance evaluation of technical systems for the buildings.

In particular the following topics will be covered:

-       Perspective of the European Directive on energy efficiency in buildings (EPBD, 2002 and EPBD recast, 2010) ; towards nearly zero energy buildings  (NZEBs)

-       Hygrothermal performance of building components: envelope design, surface and interstitial condensations;

-       Thermal performance of buildings: calculation of energy use for space heating and cooling for HVAC system sizing;

-       Technical systems (HVAC) for heating, cooling and air conditioning;

-       Natural and mechanical ventilation systems;

-       Renewable energy sources and technological systems;

-       Geothermal heat pump systems: operating principles, components and sizing;

-       Photovoltaic systems : operating principles, components and design criteria;

-       Solar thermal systems: use of solar energy for heating, cooling and domestic hot water (DHW) production;

-       Economic and Green house gases (GHG) analysis

-       Acoustic behaviour of materials, reverberation time, barriers and sound insulation, noise impact, noise control.

The lectures will be supported by the exercises through calculation methods and simple software tools, some during the lectures, others to be carried out independently by students under the supervision of the teacher. It is also planned to carry out visits to some technical systems of particular interest on the topics covered in the course.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation will be partially due to the score obtained in a written test and partially due to the evaluation of the “design exercise” carried out by the students (individual or group of max 2 students) during the course. The written exam will be based on short questions related to the theoretical concepts and design calculations on technical systems. The "design exercise" will be related to design and performance evaluation of a sample building within the objectove of nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs).
