The course introduces students to a selection of methods and tools needed to describe urban and territorial systems at different scales in a planning and project perspective, considering the design of images of territories, the recognizing and understanding of territorial dynamics and transformations and the development of scenarios.

From the public administration point of view, the availability of adequate knowledge of territorial features and needs is crucial to obtain reliable scenarios of future developments. A basis for decision making concerning policy action, governance, planning and management of urban and territorial systems. From the private agents point of view, good quality knowledge of urban and territorial qualities, specificities, availability and demand for services and building activities are important to increase effectiveness and efficiency in real estate management and other territorially-based activities and investments.

The course work will be developed on two main fields: territorial analysis from an operational perspective and interpretative keys and approaches.

Concerning the operational field, methods and tools will be provided to:

  • identify the elements which characterize urban and territorial systems;
  • learn how to highlight characteristics and main specificities of urban and territorial systems, also looking at strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as a basis to design scenarios and identify potentials for the future;
  • produce adequate reports of territorial state of the art, using adequate tools to process and represent quantitative and qualitative data;
  • evaluation methods: identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the light of different growth models and the enhancement of the values of the natural and cultural environments protection, sustainable development and resilience.

Concerning the interpretative keys and approaches:

  • looking at urban and territorial systems as complex systems of resources: methods and tools to identify and describe the resource system;
  • draw attention on urban and territorial systems in terms of opportunities and risks, looking at the interests of both public and private stakeholders;
  • history and development models of urban areas and analysis of the built environment;
  • deepen the knowledge on approaches, models and interpretative keys looking at the maximum possible protection and valorization of natural and social capital, cultural heritage and public goods in a sustainable development and territorial resilience perspective.

The course is meant to provide students with an approach looking at urban and territorial systems as an integrated and complex system of resources, activities, actors and physical structures whose adequate knowledge is needed as a crucial element to support and address public and private action on territories.


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be based on individual and group work.

The individual work will be based on bibliography: students attending the course will choose two books in a list which will be provided at the starting of the course and make a summary following a specific demand path. The group work will be developed during the course and consist in experimenting territorial analysis from a practical and operational point of view. The final exam rules and the evaluation method will be introduced in detail at the starting of the course for both attending and non attending students
