THE STUDIO'S AIM
This Studio seeks an approach in Landscape architecture where poetry regains its required space.
The lack of sensibility towards atavistic and primordial quality of the place is a recurring issue in
today's projects in landscapes and urban fabrics, in villages and cities. Today all sites seem to look
the same, insipid and colorless, flat and sterile, standardized merely in accordance with
managerial requirements. The result is often not those we identify as able to transmit beauty.
Against this we are called to intervene.
THE STUDIO'S RESEARCH CHALLENGE AND ITS APPROACH
Using a contemporary language of expression, the studio will be seeking to research how a spirit,
an identity of site can be re-established through the design of artistic and projectual interventions.
Which innovative form of expression can be found? Research will focus on study of the history of
the development of a site, its historical background and relationship to the territory, its potential
qualities, gathering specific information about the place and investigating the particular needs in the area.
Site interpretations such as mapping, photographic surveys and sketching will be
important part of the studio introduction. Development of proposals will range from the elaboration
of concepts through their translation into detailed proposals through drawings and models, that
pursue the language of simplicity and essentiality.
Visit of the site, mapping, plotting as well as participation and attendance are essential factors
for the final outcome. The project site and the detailed programm will be explained and illustrated
at the beginning of the course.
Evaluation is based on a Project to be discussed and reviewed during the final presentation and critique.
Couples teamwork is allowed. Indipendent working is higly recommended and appreciated
as a way to enhance the individual creative aptitude and personal processes. The student's progress
will be part of the evaluation, as much as the obtained projectual results.
As introduction and "instrument to work" the small compendium of Bruno Munari, Fantasia, Laterza, 2006
is an invitation to play out of your skin.
Other readings and project-specific references will be communicated during the Workshop.
WE WILL COLLECT POINTS OF ORIENTATION TO PROVOKE A CHANGE IN THE WAY WE SEE THINGS, THINK AND FORM OPINIONS.
