Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

This introductory course aims at addressing the fundamental aspects of nuclear engineering, with specific emphasis on nuclear energy. The educational focus is to let the Student become aware of the main features of the nuclear system as well as its complexity: from reactor physics to nuclear power plants technology, from nuclear fuel and fuel cycle to safety criteria and economics.

At the end of the course the Student will become familiar with the basic terms of nuclear engineering, needed to start or to deepen the educational program in the nuclear sector at the MSc level.

Syllabus:

(part A)

  • Basic elements of Nuclear Energy and Engineering and historical hints on the nuclear industry: inception and development of the nuclear sector; military and civilian use of nuclear energy; current international status and relevance of nuclear energy in the Wold.
  • Reactor physics concepts: neutron moderation; chain reaction and criticality; 4 factors and 6 factors formula; reactivity, control and neutronic feedbacks.
  • Nuclear engineering for energy production - thermal reactors: basic elements of the nuclear system; thermal neutron reactors:
       - graphite moderated, gas cooled reactors (GCRs),
       - pressurized water reactors (PWRs),
       - boiling water reactors (BWRs),
       - pressurised heavy water moderated reactors (PHWRs).

(part B)

  • Nuclear engineering for energy production - fast reactors, new reactors:
       - liquid metal, fast neutron reactors (LMFRs),
       - new generation reactors (GenIII, GenIII+, SMRs, GenIV).
  • Nuclear fuel cycle: basic stages; fuel enrichment methods; fuel fabrication; exhausted fuel storage, transportation and treatment; waste confinement.
  • Nuclear power plant safety: principles and goals; nuclear safety criteria; defense-in-depth; main active and passive safety systems.
  • Nuclear system economics: specific features of electro-nuclear costs; production costs.

The course is structured in: lectures, exercises, visits on-site (nuclear power plants, manufacturing industries, etc.), seminars offered by national and international guest professors, researchers and industrial experts.

Final exam: written + oral examination; no midterm exams.
