Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Detailed program

The first title of the course, Building Pathology, usually refers to those degradation mechanisms of a building matherial that turn a building component or subsystem up to a state of performance lack, in a time lag quicker than their “normal” (planned) service life.

Aim of the course is to let the student practice and learn how to recognize building failures (identify performance and degradation problems, analize and diagnose them). The course deals with non-structural building parts (services excluded).

The skills the course aims to seminate in the students are those of the forensic engineer, useful in building inspection practice, applied to evaluate existing buildings, to review and validate design documents and to assess building products and construction systems.

The lessons deal with the relation between building technologies and failure modes, design choices and failure cases.

Laboratory activities practice the identification of the “signs” (anomalies and degradation patterns), the analysis of decay processes and the writing of a synthesis (report).

The detail program is the following:

LEZ00 – Presentation of the course, introduction to building pathology

ESE01 – Conceptual mapping and event trees + wiki.pato use and EP01
