Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course deals with the study of metallic materials and of their treatments. The attention is focused on specialty steels and high Cr-Ni alloys and specialty Ti light alloys. The behaviour of these materials is discussed as a function of the crystallographic and microstructural aspects and the most significant failure phenomena (fatigue, brittleness, corrosion and creep) are taken into account. The relation among such damaging processes and the working processes, defects and joining technologies are pointed out.

 

 

Details about the treated items

  1. The steels and specialty steels: Fundamentals about the microstructure. The detrimental chemical elements and the effects of the main alloying elements. Low carbon steels for structural application, drawing, mechanical application, pipe and railways etc. High strength engineering steels: quenched and tempered steel, steel for carburizing, steels for nitriding, steel for surface quenching. The Life Cycle Assessment and recycle of the steel products.
  2. Detrimental and failure phenomena: Corrosion, wear, fatigue, brittleness and their relations with the microstructural features of the metal alloys. Brief introduction to the failure analysis.
  3. Steels for special applications. Stainless steels (austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex, precipitation hardened), tool steels, bearing steels, advanced high strength steels (DP, CP, TRIP/TWIP), high temperature steels, steels for cryogenic applications.
  4. Metals and special alloys: Nickel and Ni-alloys and their applications. Ni-Cr super-alloys and their applications. Ti and Ti-alloys and their applications. Mg and Mg alloys and their applications. Defects affecting the metal alloys.
  5. Production process: fundamental aspects of the production and transformation process of the steels and the texture effects.
