Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Starting from the critical reading of the structure of a “brief” for the sustainable architecture design, the course provides the tools and the techniques of environmental control in the building design. The structure of a “brief” identifies a program of designing with the main requirements of sustainability, derived from the rational use of the energy resources and materials, health – well-being - hygiene and environmental protection. The course is focused on the issues related to the morphology and internal distribution, building envelope/structure system, low energy technologies in function of the expected energy performance and comfort (related to heating, cooling and lighting) and of environmental impact. Particularly, the course addresses the aspects related to the environmental morphology, use of climatic and technological resources for the heating and cooling and the natural lighting control, also in the context of rapid evolution of regulations on building energy efficiency. The knowledge acquired will allow the students to select and to integrate in the project the most appropriate shape in the context, the ratio between opaque and transparent envelope in different orientations, insulation and the thermal mass, the solar protection of transparent envelope, simple technologies of capture/conversion of solar energy, low energy technologies for heating and cooling, for minimizing the annual energy requirement. A preliminary evaluation of summer comfort will also be made. 

The Course is organising in two parts: the first one is methodological (to know) and the second is applicative (to do).  The first part is divided in the following modules: 

  • Introduction to the structure of design process ("briefing" in context of sustainable development).  Examples of briefing and architecture. 
  • Climate, microclimate, site analysis and bio-climatic design strategies.
  • Comfort (indoor and open spaces).
  • Urban shape (orientation and critical distances, solar and thermal radiation control in the urban spaces) and building shape (factors related to solar envelope).
  • Envelope/structure (thermal insulation, thermal inertia summer/winter, ventilation, solar protection, natural lighting, heating and cooling demand).
  • Renewable energy sources and low energy technologies.
  • Simplified life cycle analysis (energy and environmental costs of construction and management: simplified methods).

The second part is related to a design exercise that assumes a well-defined program under which the students are asked to verify a project (already done or in course of drawing up), using the methods treated from the course.


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The final exam will be in form of written test (and oral exam if needed) focused on the contens of the lessons both foth the students atending the course or not. The students attending the course have the possibility to prepare a booklet with small design exercises completed during the classes. This booklet will be considered in the exam
