THEORY AND DESIGN OF BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES
Presentation of the course: the pairing of building / structure the flow of loads through the structure: forces in beams, material stresses the project: the design of a structure, the design of structural elements the integrated course: Mechanics of structures: the basic elements for the calculation of structures Structural design: an initial view of design tools
Mechanics of structures (50 hours):
1. Forces (representation, operations) 2. Moments (concept, Varignon's Theorem) 3. Centroid of a system of parallel forces 4. Centroid of plane figures 5. Equilibrium of a rigid body (invariant properties, equations) 6. Kinematic analysis (constraints and degrees of freedom, individual beams, beam systems, stability) 7. Constraining forces (single rods, articulated systems, closed systems)
8. Internal resisting forces and moments (definition, calculation, diagrams) 9. Pinconnected structures
Structural design (40 hours):
1. Loads on structures:  different types: dead loads (structural materials and their weights), live loads (occupancy loads, wind, snow, earthquake, ...)  representation: concentrated loads and distributed loads (lines, surfaces, volumes) 2 . The structural scheme:  onedimensional structural elements (rods, ropes, arches), twodimensional (walls, plates), threedimensional (sometimes domes)  different types of structural wall frames and structures  the assembly of structural elements: lateral forces, regularity of plan and floors 3. The flow of loads:  the fundamental modes of propagation of loading: compression, tensile, bending, shear, torsion 4. Transmission and distribution of loads:  the load paths and areas of influence
So far: the overall functioning of the structure (the concept of a scheme) From here onwards: local operation (the element design for given loads)
5. Concepts of stress and strain:  tangential and normal stress on a surface  representation of plane stress  the constitutive law (for the most common materials) 6. The geometric properties of sections  center of gravity, static moment, moments of inertia 7.Stress calculation and the design of the section:  steel structures: N, M, T  reinforced concrete structures: N, M  wooden structures (and masonry): outline  Mohr's circle, failure theories

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione 
As far as bibliography is concerned, some reference texts will be suggested during the course of the semester; lecture notes and handouts will also be a very important source of information. There will be two tests, one on the diagrams of internal forces in structures, and the other one on evaluation of stresses in beams caused by bending and shear. Semisufficiency in both tests is required to pass the exam. Given the restricted amount of material which will be available for problem solving and so on, students are highly encouraged to atttend class regularly, in order to better understand the subject.
The final grade will be based 1/3 on the test on internal forces and 2/3 on the test about beam theory. If the weighted average is at least 18, the student will be assigned a grade. The students who do not accept the assigned grade will have to take both parts of the exam again, AND THIS RULE WILL BE APPLIED VERY STRICTLY.
