Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course provides students with an exploration of the main social and physical transformations that are peculiar of contemporary cities. Current social and economic changes redefine the configuration of contemporary cities and raise new concerns about the nexus between social integration and urban development. Architecture and urban planning play a crucial role in the creation of spaces and opportunities for social integration. The course’s aim is giving the student some critical and practical instruments to consider the social impact of current spatial and economical transformations of the city.

The course will be split in two parts. The first part is introductory and is focused on the peculiarities of contemporary cities. The main economic, social and morphologic changes taking place in contemporary cities will be studied, with attention paid to the main social problems affecting the most deprived population and peripheral urban areas (urban poverty, social and ethnic segregation, distressed neighbourhoods). The second part will be devoted to practical analysis of particular urban problems. Students will be required to group together and carry out specific analysis on one or more of the following issues:  a) social and spatial transformations taking place in contemporary cities, such as gentrification , requalification of specific areas; b) the impact of big projects of urban transformation; c) the problems and opportunities of the multi-ethnic city: the urban localisation, the social and economic role played by immigrants; d) the problems of distressed peripheral areas and the role of social housing.

Attending students are required to prepare a short analysis of an urban space according to the instructions given by the professor.
