Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course "Value Analysis of Tech-Sport Business" aims to equip students with crossing-edge knowledge of how to create “value” in the Tech-Sport Ecosystem through different methods, and how to improve the product-market fit of Sport-Tech innovations. Additionally, students will develop practical abilities in the analysis of the value of Tech-Sport innovation through real-life group project work about the launch on the market of a new tech product in the Sports industry (i.e. a bike, climbing equipment, gym/fitness equipment, etc.) with the engagement of a real Tech-Sport company.

The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the expected learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities:

  1. Understand the context, functions, and processes in a business and industrial environment and the impact of those factors on business performance;
  2. Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modelling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment.

At the end of the course, Students will be able to:

  • Apply the methods and models discussed during the course to real cases
  • Read and interpret the financial and non-financial performance of a Tech-Sport enterprise (and of its constituencies)
  • Prepare robust and comprehensive business strategies and marketing initiatives to enable the diffusion of innovative Tech-Sport products and services 

Argomenti trattati

The program of this course covers two main topics.

First, fundamentals of business administration to understand the value generated by Tech-Sport Enterprises (Profitability, Liquidity, and Leverage Analysis through accounting-based key performance indicators) and to assess the long-term value of Tech-Sport Enterprises (both corporations and start-ups) through Discounted Cash-Flow methods. This part of the course will be delivered in self-learning by attending the Open Online Course “Fundamentals of Financial and Management Accounting” available on the POLIMI POK Portal and through in-class practical exercises applied to Tech-Sport cases.

Second, how to develop innovative and sustainable Business Models and Business Plans for Tech-Sport products/services focusing on:

  • market analysis techniques dealing with external factors, customers, players in the distribution chain of Tech-Sport products, competitors
  • market segmentation and customer personas
  • market sizing and demand forecast for a Tech-Sport products/services
  • break-even point
  • marketing strategy and plan to leverage product features, service and communication
  • economical and financial forecasting

Lectures will combine a mix of theoretical content (24 hours) and practical one (24 hours) dedicated to project supervision and review by professors. A real company in the Tech-Sport industry will be involved to share a real challenge about product launch on the market and to evaluate the final output.

Lectures will be also enriched with guest speakers and/or company visits from the Tech-Sport business to provide Students with lessons learned from daily practice.

SDG3: 4 hours are dedicated to understanding how the Tech-Sport business can contribute to the health and social challenges, creating social value. Learning methods such as the Social Return On Investment will enable Students to measure the social value created by Sports Tech companies through their products and services.

SDG9: 12 hours are dedicated to understanding how enterprises might improve their performance and sustainability over time.


Prerequisiti

There are no specific requirements to attend this course.


Modalità di valutazione

The assessment of learning is based on two assignments.
A group assignment (80% of the final grade) that consists of developing a project in small groups on the topics of this course in collaboration with a company in the Tech-Sport sector. Company managers will provide an evaluation of business impact and the professors about methodologies and results.
An individual assignment (20% of the final grade) that consists of an interview on the topics of the course to assess the degree of understanding of them.
