Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The aim of the course is to give the students a solid and wide knowledge about the main materials employed in the current and the future industrial and engineering applications. The course topics will deal with the steelmaking and the primary production of some light alloys, the mechanical behavior of the most employed metallic and non-metallic engineering materials and the introduction to the materials damage phenomena. Experimental laboratory activity is also included in the course, during which the students will study specific problems related to industrial issues.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

After the course, the student will:

  1. have a wide knowledge about the structural alloys that can be used for the design of mechanical components;
  2. know how the properties of these alloys can be modified and influenced by the manufacturing process;
  3. be able to select the proper material and heat treatments depending on the service conditions and requirements;
  4. know how the service condition may change the material's mechanical and corrosion resistance;
  5. have basic understanding of the cause of failures and of the possible solutions;
  6. be able to use the main instruments employed in the materials analysis;

  1. Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys primary production
  • Iron ore and scrap-based processes. Secondary steelmaking. Continuous casting and mold casting. Solidification theory. Non-metallic inclusions.
  • Main aspects of Aluminum and Titanium production
  1. Materials for engineering applications
  • Materials for structural and engineering applications 
  • Stainless steels, tool steels
  • Aluminum alloys
  • LCA of metallic and non-metallic materials
  1. Introduction to the damage phenomena
  • Brittleness, fatigue, corrosion, creep
  1. Experimental laboratory activity 
  • Team-working on specific topics

Prerequisiti

Students are required to know the basic principles of physical metallurgy, the main test for the mechanical characterization (i.e. tensile tests, hardness tests, impact tests), the equilibrium diagrams and the Fe-C diagram, the basic steel heat treatments and the CCT and TTT diagrams.


Modalità di valutazione

The exam consists of a written test with 2/4 questions about selected topics and an oral part to discuss the written test result.

The aim is to verify the communication effectiveness, the knowledge of the course topics and the ability to apply such knowledge in the solution of the proposed questions.
