Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course aims at providing the conceptual and practical foundations to reason on the design, realization, operation, and economic value of smart digital technologies deployed in the built environment at scales from single buildings to cities and regions.

Students are expected to learn how to frame the construction, planning, engineering, and economic appraising of Smart Cities. 


Argomenti trattati

The course unfolds in an interdisciplinary fashion across digital technologies for pervasive sensing and actuation, the operation of the Internet of Things, data collection and aggregation in the cloud, through the discussion of economic microfoundations for the Smart City effect, to the econometric methodologies needed to analyze cross-sections of economic data on Smart Cities.

The progression from the concrete operation of single digital sensors all the way to the value yield of aggregate data at the city level, along with the corresponding societal implications, are central to the course.

Teaching includes an appropriate blend of traditional front classes, flipped classrooms, group work, and hands-on lab sessions where students obtain a first-hand feeling of the technology at stake and its operation.

Around 8h of teaching are reserved to provide the necessary computer science background to students coming from non-CS programs, making the course widely accessible. We plan for at least one visit to an external entity, such as a company or public body active in this field, in the course of the semester.


Prerequisiti

No specific (compulsory) prerequisite. However, working knowledge of basic statistics, regional and urban economics, and programming will make students’ life easier. 


Modalità di valutazione

Students will be graded on the basis of an individual assessment and group projects that requires the practical application of the concepts discussed in the course.
