054331 - MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL DESIGN OF FLUID-DYNAMIC PROCESSES

Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Course 058358 is an integrated course compound of two modules, each of them accounting for 5 CFU: 058356 - INDUSTRIAL HYDRAULICS [MOD.1] and 058357 - INDUSTRIAL HYDRAULICS [MOD.2].
A 6 cfu version of this course with the name “Management and control design of fluid-dynamic processes” is offered.

Hydraulics is at the base of many industrial processes and devices. The course introduces students to the management and design of control and measurement instrumentation involved in complex fluid-dynamic processes used in civil, industrial and energy fields focusing on the effectiveness of innovative strategies and tools.

The students will manage simulations on physical and numerical models of fluid dynamics systems for the study and verification of production, service, treatment and transport processes.

The course is financed and based on the proactive collaboration with industrial partners:

Endress + Hauser Italia S.p.A.; KSB Italia S.p.A.; Pide s.r.l;  Idrogest s.rl. Enydros s.r.l.

The course is projected using innovative didactic strategy (“Didattica Innovativa corso in co-tutela con aziende”). The Academic staff and industrial partners will share their expertise with the students and they will be engaged during the development of the students’ projects. In this way the theoretical approach, by the teacher, is combined directly with problem-solving activities supported by Managers, Engineers and External technicians by partners.

Argomenti trattati

The topics investigated during the course are the ones involved in the project that the students develop with the tutoring of the industrial and academic staff. The project will be proposed at the beginning of the course and will be defined depending on the target of the companies involved in the course, on the number and if possible, on the attitude of the students.

Introduction to the instrumentation and devices mainly used in fluid dynamic processes (flow meters, pressure and temperature transducers, pumps, inverted pumps, control valves) will be one of the main topics of the course together with the basis of fluid transport, distribution and energy production and recovery processes.

The students, in small groups, will access the hydraulic laboratory (at Politecnico di Milano or at one of the partners’ office). They will have the possibility to use measurement instrumentation, acquisition systems and try them on real fluid dynamic processes. The laboratory work will focus on the performance of hydraulic devices in critical conditions. Tools for data analysis will be introduced to the scope like the use of DAQ system and data analysis software.

Obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile - SDGs
Questo insegnamento contribuisce al raggiungimento dei seguenti Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'Agenda ONU 2030:
  • SDG6 - CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
  • SDG9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
  • SDG13 - CLIMATE ACTION

Several of the topics that will be investigated during the course regard the application of technologies and methodologies for the enhancement of hydraulic plants applied to Civil, Industrial and Agricultural applications. The use of up-to-date solutions allows the reduction of water and energy consumption increasing as well the infrastructure resilience and sustainability, in accordance with the SDG scopes.

Prerequisiti

Fundamentals of: hydraulics and fluid mechanics; computational fluid dynamics; dimensional analysis, similitude and modelling.

Modalità di valutazione

The assessment will consist in an oral group presentation of the project developed during the course to be done before the end of the course. Will be subject of evaluation:

-the quality of the project

-the ability to answer direct questions about the work done by each component of the group

-some soft-skills: organization of the presentation and the capacity of explaining the concepts within the available time.
