Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course is aimed at teaching students how to be critical thinkers able to apply their knowledge to solve a real-problem coming from an external stakeholder such as a company.

Students will work in groups under the joint supervision of a company and an academic tutor.

The proposing company defines specific objectives and expected results (project briefs) that should be achieved by the group during the course. The students will learn how to identify needs, define functional and technical specifications, design prototypes and validate their design. Special attention will be devoted to develop in students: i) a sense of personal responsibility with respect to the project goal, ii) the ability to collaborate in team iii) the communication ability required to present their project.

Indeed, students will attend project-advancement meeting to present project deliverables and milestones specifically suited for each individual project. A final dissemination meeting will be held where every team will present their achievements.

The course project activity could be held within Politecnico and company laboratories, if necessary and according to companies’ availability.

The course involves 2 innovative teaching CFUs.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Knowledge and understanding

Students will gain knowledge about:

 - How to solve a problem starting from real needs, identifying requirements, and designing prototypes (TRL 3/4) within a fixed timeframe.

 - Basic principles concerning how to give technical presentations

Applying knowledge and understanding

Given a specific project, students will be able to:

 - gather experience from industry professionals

 - plan the activity of the team to efficiently reach the project aims

 - define functional requirements and technical specification

 - design and eventually test an effective solution (prototype)

Making judgements

Given a relatively complex problem, students will be able to:

 - develop self-assessment abilities

 - improve collaboration skills and responsibility

 - estimate the resources needed for the proposed solution, identify risks and define mitigation actions

Communication

Students will learn to:

 - improve communication skills by presenting their work to their colleagues and to both the company and academic tutor

 - improve skills in disseminating the final results to the general public

Lifelong learning skills

Students will learn:

 - how to develop a real project proposed by an external stakeholder;

 - how to work in team according to a precise gantt of activities.

Argomenti trattati

The lecturer will assign every team with a specific project. Proponent companies will identify the specific tasks and aims. Teams will be advised by a company-based supervisor and an academic tutor.

Students will be provided with skills focused on prototype design, such as work organization, communication and dissemination. Lessons will be focused on project planning, team work, privacy, risk analysis and regulations concerning biomedical devices.

Meetings will be held with every single group to assess project advancement. Groups will discuss their advancements with the lecturer, the company advisor (if available) and other students to provide an active and participated discussion to promote constructive criticism skills.

Every group will discuss their final design in a plenary final presentation.

Further details on the course organisation will be provided during the first day.

Obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile - SDGs
Questo insegnamento contribuisce al raggiungimento dei seguenti Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'Agenda ONU 2030:
  • SDG3 - GOOD HEALTH AND WELLBEING
  • SDG4 - QUALITY EDUCATION
  • SDG9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

The projects are proposed by companies and are different in the different academic years. For suse a common aim of such projects can be to provide prototypes able to reply to real needs and able to innovate the biomedical field. The 3 selected SDG are the ones that are more common in our actual context of collaboration.
