Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The aim of the laboratory is to integrate the knowledge, instruments and methods acquired during the laurea magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) learning road and systemize them. The laboratory proposes innovative project research topics, in harmony with emerging social, cultural and technical tendencies, to explore new product scenarios. Teaching is carried out with companies, institutions and research and development centres, with the aim of transferring skills that are functional for the development of innovative solutions.

Students:
- are familiar with and understand the processes, methods and instruments required for interpreting, in a critical manner, the design themes in the widest context of cultural, social and technological transformation;
- know how to elaborate a design, with particular attention on the functional, typological, structural and technical aspects;
- independently and in a group, operate and communicate the design choices made, developing attitudes towards negotiation, team building, leadership and managing conflict

We live in a world where the physical and digital dimensions are hybridising.

The Final Synthesis Studio Smart Design (the Lab Smart Design) aims to address the newest, most challenging and bursting dimension of the Industrial Product. A product that is part of a service, that enhances the capabilities and quality of life of users by improving their experience.

For this reason, the Lab intends to explore the most contemporary dimension of the design project, i.e. the relationship between design, new technologies and interaction for the creation of new experiences, new products and new services to improve the quality of life of users.

Specifically, the questions underlying the experimentation are:


- What is the relationship between Design and Smart products/services?


- How can Design contribute to giving meaning and value to new technologies and materials?


- How can the physical and technical/performance dimensions of products be integrated with the intangible qualities̀ that make the product and service accessible and desirable?

The course will present two Sprint Execution workshops in collaboration with two leading global innovation companies.

The topics of the workshops will explore scenarios in relation to:
- How will the user be assisted by AI in the home of the future?
- How will the concept of comfort evolve if sustainability has to come first?
- How will culture be shaped by new dynamic lifestyle?

The course includes seminar contributions from professionals and experts who will complement the contributions of the lecturers in order to explore trending topics and explore concrete cases on which to experiment in a Smart perspective.

The Lab Smart Design aims to provide an immersive and professionalising experience that mimics a real-world context, giving students the opportunity to work with real-life briefs from two international companies. These briefs will be the subject of workshops and will then be the subject of individual Final Project, which could also lead to thesis work.

Further and more specific bibliographical indications will be provided during the development of the course.

Prerequisiti

To attend the Final Synthesis Laboratory, students must pass the 1st year laboratories.


Modalità di valutazione

The Final Synthesis Studio SMART DESIGN is open to attending students only (at least 80% attendance is required).
The course includes ex-cathedra lectures by the lecturer who will help outline and explain the subject matter of the course and provide students with the tools to carry out the proposed work.
The lecturer's contribution will be supplemented by a series of guest lecturers/external professionals who, through their own testimonies and the presentation of case studies, will illustrate and contextualise the topics dealt with.

The Lab Smart Design will be divided into the following activities, in which the students will actively participate
- initial collective seminar with lessons on the general framework of the two modules;
- Workshop 1) Company 1 - Topic 1 - research activities/project workshops (group activities, max 3/4 persons);
- Workshop 2) Company 2 - Topic 2 - research activity/project workshop (group activity, max 3/4 people);
- Final Project Work (possibility of individual activity);
- Possible final exhibition/event (with modalities to be defined),

Evaluation criteria
For attending students the assessment will be made by evaluating
1. active and proactive participation in the course and team building and teamwork skills
2. the performance of the exercises in a proactive manner (workshop 1, workshop 2, final project work)
The assessment will consist of a non-mathematical weighted average of the assessments obtained.
The course materials will be available in the course area of the WeBeep portal.
