Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The objective of the course is to develop the ability of integrating some fundamental technical competences supporting the architectural design process: structural competences, technological competences and 3D surveying and mapping competences.

The structural competences are aimed to attain the ability to design buildings that interpret the architectural idea and are structurally safe, soundly built, and do not cost more than necessary. The technological competences are aimed to design buildings which are easily buildable, durable, maintainable, and allow an adequate control of thermal, lighting and acoustic conditions. The surveying competences are aimed to design and operate 3D geometric reconstruction of the building site and to plan the staking out during the construction phase.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The student will be brought to a robust understanding about:

- the ability to take technical and constructional design choices which are sustainable and appropriate to the building contexts;

- the ability to design buildings which are easy to construct, easy to maintain, durable and adequately performant at thermal, lighting and acoustic level;

- the ability to govern the structural conception of building structures so as to make them safe, stable, robust and adequate to their functional requisites;

- the ability to obtain a deep and sound knowledge of the building sites, and the opportunities and constraints regarding them, on the basis of their geometrical and material features;

- the ability to support their design choices on analytic and/or simplified predictive models;

The students, through the feedback given to the design hypotheses they will develop and refine, will be brought to the condition of strengthening their capacity to apply autonomously their technical knowledge to real design situation by integrating the requirements coming from different disciplinary areas. They also will be solicited to refine the capacity of communicating effectively their design choices by supporting them with objective considerations.

Argomenti trattati

The activities of the workshop will be structured around an architectural design project and will be integrated with a schedule of lectures.
In the lectures, standard procedures will be outlined for the structural design of buildings - allowing for the structural assessment of steel, concrete and wood elements – and for the environmental (hygro-thermal, lighting, acoustic) performances linked to the construction choices.
The lectures regarding structural design will touch on the following topics: general concepts on structures (typological classification, structural materials, structural organization (vertical and lateral loads), structural safety); structural models (forces, stresses and deformations, resistance criteria, trusses and beams, structural analysis of determinate and simple indeterminate structures); simplified modelling of structure; load analysis and preliminary structural design according to building codes.
The lectures regarding environmental and technological design will be structured around the following topics: technological appropriateness; conditions for constructability; design and construction strategies for reducing the thermal loads of buildings for heating and cooling; design and construction strategies aimed at daylighting; design and construction strategies aimed to acoustic quality; construction strategies for opaque and transparent building envelopes (roofs and facades).
The lectures regarding 3D site surveying and mapping will aim to build an understanding of the building sites and their relations with the candidate building forms. For doing that, they will provide some basic tools for the analysis of the urban or rural context where the new buildings have to be inserted. This will involve the use of open-source GIS desktop software for handling digital maps, geodatabases, and other types of geographic information. In this framework, the technologies for surveying the portion of land candidate to host the project will be presented, as well as some basic surveying and photogrammetric methods, including the application of Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning. When possible, these tasks will be applied to a practical case. Once the project is defined, a plan for staking it out on the construction ground will be drawn. The final design will be inserted and integrated into existing digital maps.
The students will be required to develop a design project in a specific context and within specific architectural themes. In the design activities, a performance-based approach will be adopted, in which the design decisions at all levels and phases will be pursued on the basis of the performances expected from the available design options. The projects will be developed by students organized in small groups.

Obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile - SDGs
Questo insegnamento contribuisce al raggiungimento dei seguenti Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'Agenda ONU 2030:
  • SDG4 - QUALITY EDUCATION
  • SDG11 - SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
  • SDG13 - CLIMATE ACTION

Prerequisiti

Basic concepts of mathematics and mechanics. Basic concepts of topographic surveying and related instruments.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation criteria will be based on the oral presentation of the building project, including the technological and structural design. The evaluations will be individual and will take place on the basis of the design materials and reports produced in the laboratory, which will be presented on panes and orally and will be based on the level of awareness supporting the design choices, the correspondence between the design objectives and the performances which could be expected from the design solutions, and the level of integration of the design objectives.
Concurrently, students will be evaluated on the basis of the results of the specific tasks accomplished for 3D surveying of another case study. Intermediate evaluations will be done during classes about this sub-topic.
During the final exam, the students will have to demonstrate:
- the ability to make technical and constructional design choices which are environmentally sustainable and appropriate to the building contexts;
- the ability to design architectural artefacts which are adequately easy to construct, easy to maintain, durable and performant at thermal, lighting and acoustic level;
- the ability to govern the structural conception of the building structures so as to make them safe, stable, robust and adequate to their functional requisites;
- the ability to obtain a thorough knowledge of the building site geometry on the basis of existing geographic data (maps, geo-products) and by applying 3D surveying techniques;
- the ability to stake out the fundamental reference for implementing the construction on the building site on the basis of the design they have accomplished; and
- the ability to take complex design decisions integrating the functional, economic and socio-cultural perspectives coherently.
