Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

To increase the transdisciplinary basic knowledge and understanding of the key facts regarding plastics, the thirdman-made material present in the world, the sources of bioplastics, replacement perspectives, focusing of the environmental problems related to the often incorrect use of plastics, including micro and nanoplastic, and possible solutions

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Knowledge and understanding. The student will gain an overall knowledge and understanding of the chemical characteristics of plastics and bioplastics, properties, needs, uses in the economic sectors; of the fate/disposal and recovery route of plastic and bioplastics in the environment; of the environmental problems/impacts and solution approaches.Application of knowledge and understanding: the student will have to apply the knowledge acquired to perform multidisciplinary projects/case studies and lab activities on actualand emerging problems. These activities will enhance the cultural level and capability of students to confront with the challenges and opportunities coming from plastic and bioplastic in the environment and in different economical sectors. Autonomy of judgment: the student will carry out autonomous choices and interpretations with respect to case studies and lab activities supplied, being able to debate and explain the pros/cons/uncertainties of the solutions proposed or results obtained

Argomenti trattati

Elements of polymer science and technology, chemical microstructure and physical properties, sectors of usePlastic processing and recycling technologiesCritical analysis of LCA data (environmental impact assessment)Main types of bioplastics (bio-derived and / or biodegradable polymers)Alternatives and methods of recovery and production of biopolymers, from liquid and solid organic wasteBioplastics: behavior and fate in the environment and in treatment plantsMicroplastics: origin, destination, environmental impacts in water and waste treatment plants

Prerequisiti
