Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This multidisciplinary course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of molecular communication and its role in understanding how information propagates in plants, when used as biosensors to monitor the environment. Green Infrastructures are trees, shrubs, herbs, green walls, green roofs etc. The main goal of the course is to introduce students with the main functional models based on ideas from molecular communication to understand the extent at which plants can be used to sense and collect information from the surrounding environment. Molecular communication is an emerging bio-inspired communication field where molecules are used for encoding, transmitting, and receiving information, in the same way that living cells communicate. The course will give a chance to be initiated to a very exciting cutting-edge research field, which will soon influence many diverse research fields, such as engineering, chemistry, and biology.

1 - Knowledge and understanding After the end of the course, students should be able to:

- knows the different options to realize communication at the nanoscale among nano-precise entities, or nanomachines

- knows the basic principles of propagation of information in plants

- develop an interdisciplinary approach that brings together expertise from the fields of plant biology, system modelling, and chemistry

2 - Applying knowledge and understanding After the end of the course, students should be able to:

- understand and solve complex problems in different interdisciplinary areas

- integrate and individually find and re-adapt known solutions to growing problems

- summarize and present the results achieved during the analysis and specification activities

 

3 - Making judgements After the end of the course, students should be able to:

- define mathematical models by considering the informational aspects of a system and the related measures


Argomenti trattati

1. Course Presentation

2 Green Infrastructure and Natural Based Solutions e.g. greenroofs, green walls, water gardens, green corridors. Biodiversity in the Urban Environment. The importance of Local Flora Plant species and the plant biology. The Benefits of Living Green Walls in the cities (e.g. improve the microcline, reduce the air pollution, well-being). The types of Green Walls and the experiments

3. Introduction to Biological and Molecular Communication. Propagation of Information in Plants. Biosensors and Molecular Communication Applications

4. Foundations of plant cell biology and physiology (Plant cell: transcription and translation; Cell metabolism: photosynthesis and cell respiration; Plant anatomy). Plant communication (Intracellular and intercellular communication in a plant; Plant-to-plant communication). Technologies to assess plant communication (Nucleic acid detection; Protein detection; Miscellaneous).

5. Computer-based and experimental lab activities.


Prerequisiti

This course requires a basic knowledge in computer science, probability theory, chemistry, botanic, and environment.


Modalità di valutazione

Final interdisciplinary project focusing on the application of the concepts seen in the course to green infrastructures. Writing of a technical report followed by oral presentation
