Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Motivated by the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the structuring of the electrical grid into multiple microgrids that enable the provision of new smart grid services, the goal of this course is to introduce students to strategies for the optimal coordination and control of complex systems coping with aspects like a multi-agent large scale structure, the presence of uncertainty affecting the system and of integer decision variables, and the need to guarantee privacy of local information.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The students will get some insight into the electrical grid evolution and learn methods for modeling typical energy management problems and mastering their complexity through optimization-based approaches for the operation of multi-agent possibly uncertain systems. Through the project work, they will also improve autonomy, team working, and communication skills.


Argomenti trattati

1. Introduction to the electrical grid system and to the challenges and opportunities offered by its current evolution towards the smart grid concept. In particular, electrical energy production from traditional and renewable sources will be considered, as well as requirements in various use cases and scenarios, role of non-programmable sources and impact on the network infrastructure, with a special focus on technological trends and developments of DERs and microgrids, including storage, electric vehicles, and ICT technologies.

2. Description of some relevant case studies for the optimal management of the electrical grid that can be formulated in terms of constrained optimization problems possibly involving multiple agents and affected by uncertainty, calling for distributed and data-driven resolution approaches. In particular, we shall consider the provision of ancillary services to the grid by the aggregation of multiple prosumers, and the energy management of a microgrid in presence of uncertainty.

3. Motivated by the above case studies, we shall present relevant algorithms for solving constraint-coupled multi-agent convex optimization problems (the distributed dual subgradient and alternating direction method of multipliers algorithms), and discuss their extension to address the case when integer variable are present and when uncertainty known only from data is present.


Prerequisiti

Differential calculus and basics on circuit theory and optimization.


Modalità di valutazione

The final assessment will be based on - a report and a presentation on a project work carried out by the students in small groups assigned by the lecturers and related to a realistic problem related to the presented case studies, and - an oral exam on the content of the course.
