Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio which addresses the question of the Architectural Design, on the various scales, in its complexity and multi-disciplinary nature. The studio experience, which integrates the various disciplines that contribute to design education, teaches students, in theory and in practice, to develop and formulate original ideas, including in a research context.

During these studios, students must demonstrate, through an independent formulation of a project, that they are able to develop highly innovative solutions, mastering the entire design procedure and the multiple skills called into play. Indeed, students will be required to develop original solutions to topics that architects are faced with due to increasingly complex problems on the European and international horizon.

STUDIO PURPOSE_The Thematic Studio aims at providing a complex and multi-disciplinary design experience, and also a problematic openness to practice, culture, contemporary architectural debate. Through a targeted series of design experimentation addressing different scales, the main goal of the Studio is to achieve a synthesis, combining theoretical contents connected to the assigned topic, and applied activities, in order to put into practice the design knowledge acquired in the former design workshop experiences. The Thematic Studio emphasizes the centrality of the experience in the design process, which is based on integration and synthesis of the different disciplines, promoting synergies among them, both technical and scientific, humanistic and artistic, in order to integrate and enrich the field of design knowledge from both techno-typological and executive point of view.


BACKGROUND_The contemporary city appears to be fragmented into systems, fabrics and nodes, and several partial cities can be identified within it; those elements may sometimes interact and other times be in conflict. The invariants of the transformation process must be found within the history of the city so that they can be adjusted to the situations and conditions of the 21st century. The topic of contemporary cities’ urban regeneration is based on a sustainable development approach, capable to enhance and rethink the existing urban assets. In order to answer to the complex needs of the territorial strategic functions’ organization, public space definition and policy strategic planning, the Studio focuses on Complex Architectures hosting social, tertiary and residential-related services, considered as propulsive elements of urban transformation. These infrastructures constitute fundamental criteria for the redevelopment and the transformation of those areas that require a deep urban, environmental, management, social and economic rethinking.

Residence, work, culture, sport, leisure time and production are interconnected within the urban space according to diversified time plans, bringing about the reduction of trips, energy saving, pollution limitation and connections promotion between parts of the city within an interacting system of communities able to express different interpretations of urban life as a response to the requirements of different contexts.

The city, as a model of enterprise, takes on a reticular configuration able to maintain the connections between the different centres located in the various more or less peripheral districts: a structure designed to manage the complexity within which a network of intelligent computer terminals is activated to connect all the new decentralized units to the institutional centre of the city.


TOPIC_Aim of the Thematic Studio is to investigate design and spatial solutions (urban, landscape, typological, architectural, etc.) concerning the contemporary cities’ strategic transformation areas, characterized by the coexistence of public and private functions of collective interest and of high architectural and typological complexity.

The research and experimental activities will concern the design of complex educational, cultural, healthcare, and sport infrastructures which needs a rethinking of their usual architectural project, according to the social, functional and technological changes affecting contemporary society. Innovative models of development, mix of new urban functions and resilient design approaches will result in multiple architectural solutions able to be occasion for valorizing the city and its constituent parts.


The multidisciplinary approach adopted involves the disciplines of “HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR BUILT ENVIRONMENT”, “TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN FOR ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN REGENERATION” and “ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION. The aim is to define an urban and architectural project of a specific urban area of a contemporary city including its architectural elements and features.

In this sense the project acts as a radical alternative to the current ways of building the contemporary city, trying to include in a new design the different urban textures that slightly emerge from the structure of the whole urban edification.

Therefore, the architecture of the city could today be seen as a discipline that includes different fields of interest related to the a wide scale (territorial and environmental) through planning policies started locally.

The aim in not only to recognize spaces and urban elements, but also to reorganize and optimize the availability of urban structures and services with the help of a conscious usage of new technologies.


ORGANIZATION_Students are expected to acquire a critical knowledge of the project area and to study the functional program with the support of several references. Particular attention will be devoted to the masterplan drafting and project development phases with its relational, morpho-typological, spatial and architectural features in terms of regeneration and/or additions into the context.

The studio will be supported by theoretical backgrounds in the form of short lectures and seminars to share the most relevant architectural and urban planning principles; intensive daily workshops will be carried out through the division into design teams; finally, evaluation seminar will be scheduled through the semester with collective presentation and public projects’ reviews. The aim is to promote mutual exchange between the students, support an ongoing critical review of the results and address the interaction of the theoretical and empirical levels in the project discussion.

Therefore, the full-time attendance at the Thematic Studio and the participation to the mid-term evaluation seminars are considered mandatory. Exceptions or specific needs shall be discussed in advance with the Professors and Tutors.


Modalità di valutazione

EVALUATION_The final examination will assess the project as well as the acquired knowledge of both theoretical and methodological contents addressed during the Studio and in the suggest Bibliography.

The evaluation will be carried out taking into consideration the quality of the project developed and the students’ ability to argue it, with reference to the specific topics dealt within the Thematic Studio.

Dates and procedures of the exam and of midterm evaluations will be indicated by professors at the beginning of the Studio.
