Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The reality, everywhere, asks architecture a thorough cultural and ethical responsibility. Therefore the teaching aims to consolidate disciplinary knowledge and theoretical references, to feed critical attitudes, to induce conscious design choices. These tools allow to tackle the design of complex new buildings, with awareness of its formal, functional, structural, technological components.

The complexity of the design processes is faced and managed through the interconnection between the teachings of Architectural design, Structural design, Building services design, Innovative materials for architecture and Technology and design in BIM environment. The trans-disciplinary approach nourishes rationality and imagination and the possibility of recomposing form, function and construction in unitary visions bearers of new reasons and meanings.

Knowledge and experiences will allow the conclusion of the Master’s training program up to the final exam and, subsequently, to the elaboration of the degree thesis.

Lectures, project reviews, workshops, study trips, exhibitions and seminars will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate to the conclusion of the Master's course of study and to the conscious elaboration of the degree thesis:

-the attitude to consider architecture as a form of knowledge, as critical thinking, as a tool for understanding reality in the perspective of its virtuous and ethical transformation.

-the ability to learn and elaborate the multidisciplinary skills of the compositional, constructive, structural, and

service- systems components.

-the ability to apply knowledge and understanding to issues and contexts of high complexity, responsibly facing and managing the design process at different scales and in all phases, from the conceptual moment to the executive one.

-the individual capacity of making judgments using multiple criteria in the evaluation of design decisions providing a range of benefits, social values and sustainable costs.

-the ability of communication using, in all areas of confrontation and discussion, the most effective verbal and drawing means.

Argomenti trattati

The Studio is aimed at progressing students' disciplinary knowledge, theoretical tools and integrated design skills in order to grasp the "complexity" of Architecture: the search for a balance between "vision" and construction, between form and technique innovation, to respond to issues significant for contemporary social, economic and urban transformations. The design topic will focus students' attention on the role of architecture in the transformation processes of the 21st century city: an "urban device" acting in both physical and cultural settings of the city and capable of shaping new urban environment and civic spaces.

Students will be required to examine their conceptual and design propositions for two challenging sites, in Paris and Milan, to explore the contemporary emerging model of Science, Knowledge and Innovation District as high-performance workplace with the best possible conditions for communication, knowledge transfer and social interaction where leading-edge anchor institutions, universities, enterprises and start-ups cluster in a vibrant and sustainable urban environment.

As part of a large-scale development projects, wherein an innovative urban university campus is growing alongside with a multipurpose urban project that provides housing, services and business, students will: deal with new forms of rigorous, flexible urbanism capable of combining varied programs, address important aspects of new campus developments at various scales and explore the spatial organizations of these “platforms” for innovation, job creation and companies, aimed at placing cities among the top international hubs in the information society.

Students will be asked to focus on the spatial, functional, infrastructural relationships between these clusters and the city, and on the capability of what typically represented a “monofunctional enclave”, almost completely reserved for a scientific community, both in the public and private realm, to become an “authentic sustainable city district”, physically dense, highly accessible, aimed at integrating research, work, recreation and housing.

In both sites, the architectural project will test the capacities of the masterplan “plots” or “clusters” to accommodate innovative (university/corporate) teaching/research centres for wide interdisciplinary collaboration (developed up to the scale of technical and executive detail) with experimental typologies that reshape conventions of learning and research environment.

The design of a complex scientific research building (including varied ancillary functions and facilities), integrated into the masterplan as an “urban device”, will also provide an opportunity for addressing the contemporary international debate on the central role that Campuses, both academic and corporate, take in the cultural, economic and social development of the contemporary city and in its most relevant and dynamic processes of transformation.

As in the past years, the sites and themes selected for the design exercise encourage the debate between the work of the Studio and local, national and international institutions, promoting a mutual exchange between academic research and society.

If general conditions will make it possible, at the very beginning of the year the Studio will propose an optional study trip to Paris, during which innovative scientific research campuses and innovation districts will be visited, as well as remarkable contemporary architectures and urban transformations.

Modalità di valutazione

Assessment methods and criteria.

Student activities will be carried out in groups and will be developed in different phases. Each of these periods, which will correspond to specific training activities and project experiences, will end with a presentation by the students to the committee formed by all the teachers of the Studio. The Board will give each student an evaluation based on the coherence between pre-established goals and the levels of acquired cultural awareness.

The final exam will be a significant moment of critical argumentation and constructive discussion of the project design, where each student will have to demonstrate:

- in-depth disciplinary knowledge of theories and techniques of complex constructions;

- ability to apply knowledge and understanding to issues and contexts of high complexity;

- ability to responsibly facing and managing the design process at different scales and in all phases, from the conceptual moment to the executive one;

- ability to apply integrated structural, constructive and service-system solutions, as expressions of architectural form.

- ability to define and use criteria for evaluating design choices;

- modelling capacity in BIM environment

- ability to argue and critically expose the project through the most effective drawings and models.
