The aim of the course is to train students in the advanced and executive design of a sustainable product-service system: from the identification of design opportunities to the generation of ideas, from development to prototyping in the field. The Final Synthesis Design Studio provides useful tools to interpret in a critical and personal manner the themes of the project in the wider context of the ongoing cultural, social and technological transformations. Students are asked to elaborate an original project working in teams, with particular attention to semantic, functional, typological and technical aspects, as well as to define the elements of economic feasibility.

Students: - know and understand the theory and tools of the product-service system project interepreting the dynamics of multicultural and multidisciplinary interaction; - know how to grasp the implications of one's own design choices in relation to business, market, society and environment; make design synthesis; visualize product-service systems through elaborate narratives; organize a prototyping; - are able to interpret and develop, individually and in groups, project issues, sharing and communicating the design choices, working in team, developing aptitudes to negotiation, leadership and conflict management; - know how to manage problems that are not strictly inherent to the issues addressed in the teaching, by transferring what has been learnt.
This course is based on a robust and structured connection with the reality: a committed effort to understand and reflect on real life issues. Therefore, every year, it tackles concrete matters that can be explored through design, with the aim of defining opportunities for new solutions and critical thoughts, in a tight and interactive debate with experts, citizens, businesses and stakeholders of different kind.
The course, therefore, aims at designing product-service systems that, through the application of creativity and knowledge, can contribute to show possible solutions to pressing societal, environmental and economical issues. It does so, by providing methods and tools to facilitate the collaboration with the different social parties implicated in a problem, hence experimenting with co-design and with multidisciplinary exchange. As such it sits squarely in the European Bauhaus Initiative with respect to bridging disciplines to design sustainable living solutions through approaches of co-design and participation.
It is grounded in the belief that sustainability is a priority and the only possible narrative for today innovation, and that social innovation is key in any transformation, although closely connected to technological and economical innovation. In this the course will address directly three of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN: SDG 10 Reduce Inequality, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Action.
Students, therefore, will have the unique opportunity to participate in the comprehensive design of service-based solutions for a real situation, in a dialogue with specific actors: while embedded in specific contexts, the solutions will be relevant for analogous situations in other settings and will exemplify a way to go deep into a design process.
The so-conceived solutions will be designed as potential entrepreneurial ventures: students, therefore, will be guided through a PSS design process from problem definition to prototyping.
In order to do so, the course will be organised with progressive tasks and assignments to:
carry-out field and desk research
ideate product service systems
apply co-design methods and tools to engage different stakeholders
elaborate product service systems in detail
prototype product service systems
develop business models in order to evaluate and size entrepreneurial ideas.
In the Academic Year 2021/2022 the Lab will pick up the challenge offered by the European Parliament and European Commission in the Conference for the Future of Europe to involve citizens and civic organisations to participate in defining new solutions for the future. In a renewed effort of grass-root participatory democracy the EU Conference is asking citizens to propose their views and solutions to some of the most pressing challenges Europe and the world are facing : health, social justice, climate change, digital transformations and migration, among others. This is a unique opportunity to propose concepts and services that will be examined by the EU highest institutions and discussed among citizens in public events.
To attend the Final Synthesis Laboratory, students must pass the 1st year laboratories.
Modalità di valutazione
Students will work in small teams, each one developing an original project: the final evaluation will be the average of the marks obtained in the assignments developed during the course. Each assignment will generate specific outputs and will adopt different evaluation criteria.
The general assessment criteria for this course will be based upon the student's capability to get into the topic and to critically understand it, to generate and develop innovative ideas, to follow and interpret the process suggested by the instructors, to apply the basics of business modeling, and to be able to present and narrate the solution in a quality and effective way.
A good capability of team working and a pro-active participation to the course will be also considered very positively.
Attendance is mandatory for at least the 80% of the hours of the course. Participation to the collective presentations and the moments of delivery of the assignments are mandatory.
Assignments cannot be delivered or presented in dates different than those scheduled in the course’s calendar.
