TEAL-S deals with Sustainability and Eco-efficiency of novel structural membrane skins, that exploit minimal amounts of material to cover a space, compared to common envelope materials, thanks also to their ability to be tensioned, by shaping themselves to the forces ways, with a few additional components. Their environmental compatibility together with the thermal, optical, and acoustic performances are considered crucial factors during the designing phase. 

Parametric design and Eco-efficiency analysis are introduced to understand the possible optimization of the environmental impact of temporary architectures during the design phase. 

Different themes will be approached though a set of invited lectures that deal with sheltering design adopting a multidisciplinary approach: 

  • Touch the earth with lightness: architectural and landscape issues 
  • The best practices of the lightweight building systems 
  • The minimal mass construction: structural analysis and behaviour  
  • The technical textile technology and the advanced textiles’ production  
  • Thin and flexible skins and their energy efficiency 
  • Temporary shelter for choice (leisure, sport, cultural heritage protection) 
  • Temporary shelter for necessity (emergency sector) 
  • Sheltering and packaging: the optimization of the transport phase for temporary buildings 
  • Closing the loop: the reuse of components, the recyclability of textile materials; how to design and perform the temporary architecture which is reversible. 

Following the topics presented during the course, students have to finalize an original work choosing one of these application fields 

  • THEME 1: temporary emergency shelter  
  • THEME 2: temporary shelter protecting archaeological areas 
  • THEME 3: temporary shelter for a cultural heritage 

For every theme, it will be required to: (i) overcome the state of the art of temporary shelters through the study of potential applications of innovative new technologies and materials such as adaptive membranes and skins; (ii) consider the whole life cycle of the proposed scenario. 

 It has to be noticed that the learning material presented in class, along with some additional readings (when appropriated) will be distributed to the students after each lesson.

TRAINING GOALS 

The main goal of the course will be to stimulate students to apply a “lightweight thinking” both in the design and in the construction phases deepening the eco-efficiency of the involved materials and systems; this means to show a obtrusive approach both considering the built environment - focusing on temporary shelters instead of permanent or massive structures - and in landscape in general - focusing on the use of minimal mass and construction materials to be used in the most efficient way. 

By the support and the learning of software, as introduced in the Programme of the course, the objective is also to learn the possible optimization of the environmental impact of a temporary architecture starting from the design phase.

LEARNING EVALUATION 

At the end of the course students will be asked to present the result of their original work, with presentations, drawings as well as a scientific paper. A specific team of invited experts, architectural/engineering experts and academics will support the students throughout their practical activities. During the course, it will be requested to each student or group to define the topic and the outcome of their original works with the teachers. The evaluation of the original work and the analysis essay define the grade of the course.

The course will be structured in 6 days and a final one of Presentation of the original works by the students. Every day will include didactic lessons and lectures of invited experts for each application field.
