In our turbulent society, technologies are crucial in solving and shaping challenges in equal measure. The mission of this course is to offer to Ph.D. students awareness of the societal and political impact of new emerging technologies in engineering, design, and architecture. By adopting a “critical thinking” sensitivity, the course will develop practical skills and actionable tools for the responsible management of the societal impact of technological research projects.
Overall, the course will enable Ph.D. students to:
better recognize and analyse social, ethical and political aspects and critical issues inherent in technological development;
develop and render "actionable" in their everyday research work a strong reflexivity about the current social, ethical and political challenges arising by the most promising and cutting-edge technological sectors;
learn how to develop research and innovation activities that acknowledge their potential impacts on society, as strongly required by the national and European research funding institutions.
The course will be organized as a series of interactive workshops, which will include exercises via the flipped classroom teaching strategy. Powerpoint slides and a reading list will be made available during the course.

Students will be required to attend classes, to read materials, and to write a short reflective essay relating the topic of the course to their PhD research.
