Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course in Elements of architectural tipology deals with the typological and morphological aspects of architecture, focusing on the relationships with composition and distributional features of buildings and related settlements. By means of the critical analysis of emblematic architectures, cities and parts of the city, design thinking of prominent architects the course provides the knowledge for better understanding the fundamentals and principles of architectural and urban design in a wide historical perspective from ancient to contemporary age.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course allows students to develop a critical point of view on design and its techniques in order to face the project at different scales of complexity.

Argomenti trattati

The course will enlighten elements of architectural typology through the investigation of projects and buildings designed by architects of different times and cultures. Lectures will present these projects, inserting them into the socio-cultural milieu, clearing where they were thought and made, and looking for their connection with local and international networks. Different ages, and cultures, have a different and peculiar idea of the house, of the workspace, of institutions, and these differences affect the invention, of the adoption, of specific typological choices: we will try to develop a consciousness of the relations which tie the typological choices, and researches, with the cultural and political trends. Also, we'll care to put in evidence the architectural and technical choices in reference to previous and following ones, examining projects that, for specific reasons, can be considered seminal, or masterpieces, or problematic in an interesting way.

References to historical reasons will be considered, but always with the premise that architectural qualities never die, that they cross the centuries and are still necessary and fertile samples for the future of architectural design. Following this idea, we can study typological innovators of the Renaissance, like Andrea Palladio, or of the Modernist times, like Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe; of the recent years, like Aldo Rossi and Peter Zumthor, and of our times, like some architects who, in these years, in various continents, are pushing ahead the research on architectural typologies and design in some specific world's areas, such as Switzerland and Japan.

Then, our typological studies will be formed by two parallel and integrated activities. The first one, already mentioned, is made of lectures; the second will be based on a series of graphic exercises that students will make, individually, to go deeper into the analysis and comprehension of the samples treated in the lectures. These exercises will be composed of a part of sketching and drawing and a part of textual notes, and will be presented and discussed in class to help all students to better understand the possibility of keeping together culture and technique, the studying and the making, the reading and the drawing.

Modalità di valutazione

The final assessment will be based on the knowledge that the student can demonstrate on the projects and the buildings treated in the lectures and in the exercises. These projects will be analyzed in class and can be further studied in books and magazines. On the other hand, for the students who will follow the course, the skill acquired through the graphic exercises will be highly evaluated.

Bibliographical references, given here and during the lectures, have to be taken as a suggestion which helps in developing a cultural background on architectural design.
