Argomenti trattati

The main aim of the course is to present students with an advanced complex Architectural design challenge, located in a selected contemporary megacity-context. The course has an intensive workshop-type character in which the students are encouraged to develop strong theoretical projects on open and built-up spaces within an existing urban fabric of the contemporary city.
The project theme of the course for the a.a. 2020/2021, will be based on the design of architectural and urban public buildings, with particular attention to the articulation and relationship among different scales: architectural, urban, city, and territorial.

The process will start with the critical reading of the typo-morphological structure of the city and its landscape. Every students' project has to be built upon a strong theoretical stand, following by deep critical reading and reflection upon the context, the project program, and contemporary architecture and urban design languages. The development of the project should present precise reasoning (not rationalization) between the conceptualization of theory and its adaptation, rationally employing the resources of context as well as design principles; there should be a coherence between the level of response to the necessity of the site and program, and arbitrariness of architectural concept.

The character of the course has a strong prevalence of the design (progettazione) therefore, a significant number of hours will be dedicated to the revisions and discussions on the projects, starting from the first day. The design process will be developed through primary sketches toward advanced drawings and in particular, physical models are encouraged to be used in the design process.
A series of lectures/debates will also support the process of design during the workshop.

The course requires highly motivated students with an advanced level of analytical and theoretical background, and a strong sense of teamwork, as for this workshop, a 2 or 3-student group, will be the composition of each team in the competition with other teams to grow and achieve the best results.

Modalità di valutazione

The course is scheduled within 4 seminar days with external reviewers and a final public presentation/exam with an invited international jury. The exam will consist of an oral discussion/presentation.

For attending students, apart from 4 seminar days in which students’ presence is compulsory, a minimum number of project reviews (6 reviews/days) is mandatory to be qualified to enroll for the exam.

For non-attending students, a written test will be provided on the official dates of the exam which covers 7 significant theoretical books on contemporary urban and architectural design.

The mandatory books for non-attending students (suggested for attending students):

- KOOLHAAS, R. (1978) Delirious New York: a retroactive manifesto of Manhattan, The Monacelli Press.

- LE CORBUSIER. (1986) Towards a new architecture. New York, Dover Publications.
