Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The aim of the course is to allow the students to gain necessary basic knowledge in order to understand, analyze and solve problems related to electrochemical processes. The participants should also acquire knowledge about the applications of electrochemistry in the fields of electrolytic processes, electrochemical generators, sensors, electrocatalysis, bio-electrochemistry and industrial electrochemistry. Further, the students should gain basic abilities in calculations on electrochemical systems and in experimental methods in electrochemistry. The course is intended for engineering students.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Upon completion of the course, the student will
know the main components of an electrochemical system and how to analyze its performances;
know and understand the relationship between operating parameters and applications of electrochemical systems;
be able to apply the above described knowledge for the purpose of discussing selected electrochemical devices.
These learning outcomes are expected to provide the students with adequate knowledge tools and critical approach for their future activity related to electrochemical processes and devices.
Argomenti trattati
Fundamental concepts: electron transfer and mass transport, property of electrolyte solutions, assessment of cell voltage;
Electrochemical engineering: performances and figures of merit of electrochemical processes, electrolysis parameters and cell design.
Selected aspects of modern applied electrochemistry: electrowinning and refining; chlorine and organic electrosynthesis; water remediation; metal finishing: electroplating and electrophoretic deposition; energy storage devices: batteries and supercapacitors; electrochemical sensors and biosensors; photoelectrochemistry of semiconductors; corrosion of coated systems.
Prerequisiti
A background in chemistry is required.
Modalità di valutazione
The examination will be an oral discussion about the course topics, chosen by the examiner so that different parts of the course syllabus are involved.
The student must be also able to clearly describe and critically discuss selected electrochemical devices, highlighting the assumptions, critical points and industrial processing.
