Obiettivi dell'insegnamento


In questo insegnamento lo studente approfondisce tematiche caratterizzanti, e coerenti con i contenuti del corso di studi, attraverso esperienze transdisciplinari volte a far maturare conoscenza e comprensione sulle modalità di efficace valorizzazione del patrimonio edilizio, del paesaggio e dell'ambiente, intesi come risorse, con attenzione specifica alle problematiche della modificazione e rigenerazione dell’ambiente costruito e di tessuti urbani e insediativi consolidati.

In this Studio, the student explores into the topics that characterize and are coherent with the contents of the study course through transdisciplinary experiences. This experience aims at developing knowledge and understanding on how to effectively enhance the building heritage, the landscape and the environment as resources, with specific attention to the problems of the modification and regeneration of the built environment and of consolidated urban and settlement systems.

Secondo i Descrittori di Dublino (DdD), il superamento dell’esame attesta l’acquisizione dei seguenti risultati.
DdD 2 capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione:
- capacità di applicare tecniche adeguate a trasformare, operando a diverse scale, lo spazio abitato nelle sue molteplici configurazioni: morfologiche e tipologiche, ecologiche e ambientali, economiche e sociali, antropologiche e culturali.
DdD 3 (autonomia di giudizio), 4 (abilità comunicative) e 5 (capacità di apprendimento):
- capacità di operare e comunicare in autonomia le scelte progettuali effettuate (DdD 3, 4 e 5).

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- ability to apply appropriate techniques to transform, operating at different scales, the inhabited space in its multiple configurations: morphological and typological, ecological and environmental, economic and social, anthropological and cultural.
DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)
- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

ONE-TO-ONE: balanced material systems design

Climate change — by far the largest crisis humanity has ever faced— is the result of human-driven processes involving the use of energy for the transformation of matter. Every material process, organic and inorganic alike degrades available energy and depletes materials.

As technology continues to drive forward, design has to take a key role in framing how the built environment should evolve to avoid a continuous pollution of our environment and the development of unsustainable waste. A new material culture has to move from our roots encompassing our contemporary challenges.

The idea of the course is that material making is central to the act of creativity in a path of non-extractive resources, enhanced by contemporary computational design tools and digital fabrication.

So far as materials are scale-dependent, students will work on one-to-one scale mock-ups rather than scaled-down prototypes. Students will be pushed to a hands-on approach to architectural design, guided and directed by an in –depth understanding of materials thanks to the physical SaperLab Laboratory, where different matter and manufacturing machines will be provided.

A wide range of different materials, with their own self-sustaining structure, non-extractive sources of energy, bio-based characteristics and multifunctional properties, will be taken into consideration, giving complete freedom in creating a personal interpretation of today’s material culture.

The expected competences acquired by the students will be related to their capacity to inform the design process with data information, material properties, geometry principles, early stage performance calculation and topological optimization in order to increase their multidisciplinary knowledge while designing and making their own personal innovative material systems.

These experimental material systems will have to take care of a new balance between environmental technological and energy requirements but also cultural, social and human needs.
