The aim of the Studio is to provide students with operational and conceptual tools necessary to elaborate a preservation project, facing methodological and theoretical aspects in a multidisciplinary approach. The teaching will be conducted on the base of an in situ surveying exercise on the case study of which will be recognised its proper characters, its evolution, and identified the diagnosis of the degradation of structures and materials.
With particular care will be analysed the constructive features of the historical building, by recognising construction techniques, structural elements, materials and their physical and mechanical characteristics, behaviour to climatic and microclimate conditions, to highlight their peculiarities and vulnerabilities.
Following the analytical phase, that is retained unmissable to make conscious design decisions, the conservation design is developed, taking into account new forms of compatible use, with the necessary adjustments to mutated needs.

The studio approaches the preservation and compatible adaptive reuse project of historical architectural contexts, starting from the analysis and understanding of the context in its stratified dimension and urban, historical, physical and functional complexity, the assessment of state of conservation of the fabric as well as the reuse requirements and compelling provisions, including monitoring and regular maintenance requirements, to achieve a responsible, well-informed preservation and sustainable reuse project design.
The studio is articulated in a theoretical-methodological part, organized over classroom lectures, interactive presentations and discusisons, and a practical part organized in a series of visits and site-based guided ‘immersive’ practical studio exercises, which will enable students to actively approach the preservation project on selected case studies.
The theoretical part is meant to reinforce operational tools to develop the preservation and reuse project design, highlighting core principles and concepts, methodological approaches, protagonists of the history of conservation, terminology as well as most current issues in the field of preservation, while featuring a number of case studies of preservation projects, referring to the wide range of contexts, from urban, archaeological, and built heritage, either monumental or diffused heritage.
The theoretical part will serve to methodologically nurture and responsibly inform the preparation of the project design, which will be developed with the practical part. The latter, elaborated through on-field survey and student-group research, is meant as ‘immersive’ practical studio exercise, focused on selected case studies. 'SURVEY AND PROJECT IN THE 'CORPI SANTI' OF THE HISTORICAL OUTSKIRTS OF MILANO': For the selection of case studies, the studio will look at integrating into the framework of the Politecnico programme “Ri-formare Milano. Progetti per aree ed edifici in stato di abbandono”, focusing on the historical fabric known from the XVIII century cartography as the ‘Corpi Santi’ of Milan (the 'Holy Bodies'), surveyed in the still nowadays remaining physical consistency and readability in the urban landscape, as a comprehensive system of the stratified urban fabric, and meaningful elements for the today rehabilitaton project of the selected areas. With the name of ‘Corpi Santi’ of Milan was in fact designated for almost a century an independent municipality (from 1782 till 1873), corresponding to the strip of territory of the suburban extramural city comprising the farmhouses, agricultural villages, and Medieval complexes located around the city of Milan, just beyond the Spanish walls of the Lombard capital.

Modalità di valutazione
The evaluation of student achievements will be done globally through a final oral exam and the submission of the preservation and reuse project elaborated on the assigned case-study, developed based on the practical part of the studio. During the semester, exercitation papers in itinere will be also used to corroborate the mastery of main principles and methodological knowledge of the theoretical part. In line with the set objectives, the evaluation will take into consideration the following criteria: knowledge and understanding; applied knowledge and understanding in the elaboraiot of the project design; acquired skills in making decisions/judgements; communication skills; learning skills.
