Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course Architectural technology fundamentals is focused on the identification of the criteria that must be taken during the design phase to direct the choice between different technical options, paying close attention to the social, physical, productive and economical context. Doing this we should consider the whole life cycle of the building.
During the course, students will be asked to study the articulated scenery of resources and construction systems of nowadays, with particular care to performances and mutual relationships within the building system. Students will seek to understand the structure and the dynamics of the building process and the organizational modalities through which the design and construction activities allow to achieve a building from the expression of a need and the role that the stakeholders have in this process.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The expected learning outcomes are summarized in the understanding of the relationships that are established in the building between materials, technologies, functions and forms. In this sense, the student acquires the fundamental knowledge and concepts to face the subsequent design experiences with particular reference to: the relationship between constructive solution and architectural configuration (correspondence between characteristics of materials and techniques and formal outcomes achieved); the relationship between needs, requirements and performances (performance of materials and components compared to the satisfaction of specific needs of living); the relationship between the context and the building (specificity of the different cultural, climatic and productive contexts).

Argomenti trattati

The course of Architectural Technology Fundamentals has the aim of providing students with the basic knowledge to understand:

  • the relation between environmental sustainability and architectural design at the different scales of the project (urban, architectural, technological) and in the different phases of the construction process (production – construction – maintenance – closure - recycle);
  • the relationship between the site and the building in terms of knowledge and use of materials and building elements within the specific climatic, historical, social, geographical, technical and industrial context and in relation with the existing resources and restraints;
  • the general concept of quality as the ratio between requirements and performances (the building as a system aimed to satisfy the inhabitants' needs and the meaning of performance as the rate of satisfaction of specific requirements);
  • the structure and the classification of the building system and its parts;
  • the characteristics of materials, sub-systems and components (a general description of production processes and embodied energy, the relationship between the nature of materials, manufacturing, properties and performances, resources and opportunities);
  • the choice of materials and building elements in their relation to the architecture of the building;
  • an introduction to building codes.

Starting from this academic year, the course passes from 4 cfu to 6 cfu at the solicitation of the students, who have requested to increase the credits of this course, also for a greater correspondence between cfu and study load that this course requires to transfer the minimum knowledge bases. This will allow for more space to be given to the topics covered, introducing innovative practical training and seminar methods and also opening up topics related to the technological culture of design.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will take place through a final exam which includes a written oral admission test. The contents of the entire course program and the proposed exercises will be discussed in the oral exam. The preparation of the exercises according to the times indicated during the course is a necessary condition for admission to the exam.

With reference to the Dublin descriptors:

- the written test, with open-ended theoretical questions, is aimed at assessing the degree of knowledge of the subject and the ability to understand and learn the topics covered in the course;

- the oral exam, with questions relating to the course topics and the contents of the exercise activity carried out independently by the student, has as its objective the assessment of the ability to know and understand the applicative aspects of the subject and to elaborate connections between theoretical aspects and operational aspects of the various topics covered during the course. Both tests also aim to assess communication and argumentation skills, both in written and oral form.
