The laboratory places as its objective the design of a complex space, stable or temporary, indoors or outdoors, stimulating students to:

  • understand the briefing
  • to analyze the context
  • to elaborate a research
  • to set up the design answers

Students have to:
- know and understand the processes, methods and instruments needed to interpret, in a critical manner, the project themes connected with the Spatial Design sphere;
- know how to analyze the reference context and elaborate complex projects for space enhancement;
- autonomously and in a group, make and communicate the design choices made, developing an aptitude for negotiation, team building, leadership and conflict management.

Argomenti trattati

The Ephemeral/Temporary spaces Laboratory wants to investigate the issues of time and senses in relation to the ephemeral spatial design project. The key concept to be investigated, is based on the idea that, in the future, there will be not the forms of space but the forms of time at the center of the project methodology. It means that the Spatial Design discipline will have to create a grammar useful to designers to display new places for accommodating the time-space complexity of the living to which we are heading.

 Starting point: New design practices 

The laboratory analyses the ephemeral design as sense/time-based spaces. Unexpected and extreme conditions can make inadequate the places we live, forcing us to make radical changes to the spaces or, at worst, to move and go live elsewhere, transforming spaces, destined for other functions, into our temporary home. Climate change, large migrations, unexpected pandemics are possible conditions with which a spatial designer must deal with, in order to respond to new needs.Ephemeral is not only synonymous with mundanity, with event, but also with temporary, essential and vital spacecs.

Time, senses, new medias will be not the goal of the project but the tools for analyzing, for designing, for thinking on it. The laboratory aims to experiment new practices of manipulating the space during their dynamic changes long a duration of time to will be planned during the course. The media used will be the ones that students use every day, easy to be managed but already known in their potentialities.

Objective: to design Time based places The Laboratory on Ephemeral/Temporary Spaces should allow to formulate sense-time based places that can enhance new experiences, can exercise the space paradoxes that the radical changes are spreading. The place to be design during the LAB 2020-2021 will be the temporary residence pavilion (5000 sqm indoor) to host 100 homeless people, temporarily and simultaneously, for a period of 1 year. The site will be located in a railway station in the city of Milan.


Students must have had some previous design experience and to be able to use digital programs of representing space in 2 and 3D.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be based on different items. During the first semester 2020-2021 lectures will be onlne and in the classrooms. There will have theoretical lectures online on tuesday and reviews (blended) on thursday according to the calendar but also flexible to the different scenarios that will emerge on the fall 2020. The different scenarios will not affect the contents but also the way professors and students will interact. Public reviews will be hold during the semester following the calendar that will be givent to the students at the beginning of the LAB.

  • story telling
  • layout
  • models
  • time/sense based design (cronotopies, lighting, sound, materials…)
  • behaviors and fluxes (how people stay in the place)
  • details (design specifically some details related to the project)
  • displays
  • graphic design
  • research
  • video

Risorsa bibliografica obbligatoriaA list of books will be given to the students at the beginning of the Laboratory as reference for each topic. Students should study them in order to reach the contents and the methologies.
