Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The aim of the course is to provide students with the conceptual tools to read and interpret the phenomena of cultural and social change, as well as their consequences on individual and collective behaviour. Through lectures and application exercises, it provides students with a theoretical and methodological basis to identify trends and catch emerging phenomena that may influence innovation in different fields.
The course is proposed by the School within an option group of innovative didactics to support students in acquiring or strengthening their transversal skills.

Students:
- can grasp and decode social change through the observation of cultural phenomena;
- know how to use tools and methods to monitor society's behaviour and expressions in order to anticipate social change and design for innovation.


Argomenti trattati

The purpose of the course is to study the process behind industry actions and people’s behaviours, in order to identify evolution and opportunities for various business sectors.

During the semester students will have the opportunity:
• To observe reality and contexts, getting inspiration from people (not simply consumers and users) behaviours and life occasions, applying the principles of cult searching.
• To give interpretation of the socio-cultural trends emerging from different business sectors, being introduced to research materials and findings that will be delivered to them as part course’s lecture materials.
• To translate relevant insights into opportunities for design development, using the right design methods and tools proposed during the course for doing so.


Students will have to:
• Carry out desk research and cool hunting, offline and online.
• Be involved in hands on exercises and group assignments, familiarising with the variety of lecture materials presented in class.
• Work proactively with different methods and techniques arising from design, management and social sciences, and should become used into handling both traditional research techniques and experiment with new approaches.
• Originate new concepts and business ideas, giving evidence of a good understanding of trend application in project development


Prerequisiti
 

Modalità di valutazione

The exam consists in:
• One group project work to deliver and present in 2 separate research phases
• End of semester written exam with 2 open ended questions
The final grade that will be registered on POLIMI is the sum of Research Project (50%)+
Exam grade (50%)

This program was developed to be delivered in a blended mode, in compliance with the safety protocols relating to the COVID-19 health emergency, available in July 2020.
