Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The educational objective of the Laboratory is to acquire project skills for medium complexity industrial products. The design process develops from the conceptualization phase to the executive development and technical representation of the product, in a perspective of innovation based on aspects of form, use and interaction with the user, in addition to technological application and manufacturing. The Laboratory also programmes, in addition to some lectures, a wide project activity carried out in groups and supported by inspections carried out by the professors with the purpose of team building.

- knowledge and understanding: know and understand the methods for managing the whole development process for new industrial products (conception, representation, material choice and engineering) and can manage the technical-design aspects for the whole process;
- making judgements: can integrate the skills they acquired during the various theory contributions received and apply them to managing project complexity; can formulate project choices based on informed, responsible, and available information;
- communication skills: autonomously and in groups, students can develop the ability to present and discuss their projects and the attitude to negotiation and teamwork.

Argomenti trattati

The Product Development Design Studio aims at providing students with groundings on interaction design, from the methodological and design point of view; for this reason, students will focus their attention on smart products.
The Design Studio is divided into two practical exercises.
First exercise
It will address the issue of communication from the user to product and from product to user.
Students will, therefore, be asked to answer the following questions: what does the product communicate through its appearance (in its static and dynamic features)? Which kind of inputs can the user apply to control a smart product?
At this regard, particular attention will be paid to physical and gestural interfaces.
Final Project
Students will be asked to design an interactive product of medium complexity. Particular attention will be paid both to user-analysis methods developed within interaction design, and to tools useful to identify and test new solutions.

The design activity will be organized into 3 phases:
Research phase: students will be asked to choose and apply, among the design tools to discover the user’s needs, those most suitable to re-design the given product and its specific context of use.
Idea Generation: students will be asked to present 2/3 design solutions to the problem identified in the previous step.
Concept Development: in this phase, through the application of tools to create and represent an interactive product, students will select and develop the solution considered most promising.

Engineering Design For Interaction
The module “Engineering Design For Interaction” of the “Product Development Design Studio 1” aims at providing students with the knowledge and tools necessary for performing a product development process focused on human-machine interaction.
In the first part of the module, some lectures will be provided. These lectures will include topics such as the basics of interaction design and how to integrate them into a traditional product development process. In addition, techniques and tools for virtual and real prototyping of design solutions and their interfaces will be presented. These techniques and tools can be used for testing and evaluate the developed solutions, directly during the product development process. Moreover, case studies of product development processes for interaction (from the Concept Design to the Approved Design phases) will be presented, and workshops will be performed by directly applying the acquired knowledge.
The gained knowledge will be applied to the final project of the Design Studio. Specifically, students will be asked to perform a product development processes from the Idea Generation phase and to produce a final project focused on interaction. Also, students will be asked to identify what features of the designed product and of its interaction with the users need to be verified and, consequently, which are the most suitable technologies for developing its virtual and/or real prototypes.
At the end of the Design Studio, students should be able to develop a complete product design process, from the Idea Generation to the Approved Design phases, with particular emphasis on the definition of the interaction that the user will have with the product itself.


There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Modalità di valutazione

The students’ judgement will take into consideration: the active participation to in class activities, the improvement in the product development skills, the technical definition of the final project and the overall quality of the final presentation.
