051360 - PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT STUDIO
The course starts from the assumption that industrial products take shape within the tension between constraints and opportunities, or else between the limitations that characterise any design process and the innovation pathways that give the possibility to overcome those limitations.
This tension is the “natural habitat” of the NPD (New Product Development) process, as it constantly swings back and forth between its creative and its technical dimension, and between the capacity to provide solutions to concrete problems and the desire to explore possible futures.
The course is based on the integration of different disciplinary competences, coming from 3 departments of the Politecnico di Milano (Design, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Material and Chemical Engineering), which will give the opportunity to face the given design problems from different perspectives.

The student will acquire the following competences:
- ability to define the hierarchy of (and manage) a system of functional, expressive, technical-productive and market requirements and constraints;
- ability to use NPD methodologies and techniques in different contexts and sectors;
- ability to manage projects and design team dynamics, through team building skills, leadership, negotiation and conflict management.
The course will explore the relationship between design, materials and technologies within a multidisciplinary framework, briefly introducing a few relevant topics (lectures), and assigning to students concrete projects (studio), to be carried out overcoming constraints and exploiting opportunities.
The following perspectives will be integrated in the studio exercises:
Technologies as constraints
Starting from a given material/technology and a given design problem, students will be required to properly use the material/technology to tackle the problem. Main teaching objectives are the development of the capacity to individualise and understand constraints and technological limitations, and the capacity of managing product features according to a set of requirements.
Technologies as possibilities
Starting from a given design problem, students are required to develop a solution adopting the proper materials and technologies. Main teaching objective is the development of the capacity to apply methods, criteria and tools to choose materials and technologies.
Technologies as opportunities
Starting from a given material/technology, students are required to explore new possibilities of use. Main teaching objective is the development of the capacity to build and explore new scenarios of use and technology transfer.
The studio will propose 2 exercises, based on concrete problems given by companies, with the objective of exploring the above-described perspectives developing innovative but feasible products.
The exercises will introduce different levels of complexity and will give the opportunity to adopt competences acquired in the integrated course on materials and technologies that the students will simultaneously attend.
Teamwork will be required, with the objective of strengthening transversal competences.
No pre-requisites for the attendance of 1st year courses are required
Modalità di valutazione
The students’ assessment will be based on the results of the studio exercises, which will integrate the contents of the lectures and of the suggested bibliography.
The assessment will also take into account the modes of interaction with the teachers, individual and team work capacities, and presentation and representation skills.
During the semester students will receive 2 intermediate marks, whose result will contribute to their final grades, which will be registered at the end of the semester.
Only in case of serious and documented problems students will be allowed to take the exam in the following semester.

This program was developed to be delivered in a blended mode, in compliance with the safety protocols relating to the COVID-19 health emergency, available in July 2020.
