Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
In this Studio, advanced methodologies are applied for describing and interpreting physical and product contexts - practical and theoretical - of contemporary landscape culture, with the aim of experimenting with the transformation of the environment built through the design of landscape.

We expect the Studio to be a collective learning process in which knowledge is developed and shared: active participation and contribution to the organization and development of the workshop will be highly welcomed, encouraged and evaluated. Studio activities, with individual and team work, will represent the core of the workshop.
The table below sums up the methods through which the various educational activities, which the instructors include in the study program, contribute to the achievement of the expected results, determined in accordance with the following 5 Dublin descriptors: 1 Knowledge and understanding 2 Applying knowledge and understanding 3 Making judgements 4 Communication skills 5 Learning skills
The final evaluation will be based on the design elaborated, individually and in team, in relationships with the assignments of the Landscape Design Studio.

1. Analysis
Students are asked to produce a clear and well-organised reading of the existing conditions through observation, critical description and strategical forecasting, up to define: premises, directions and outputs of a project of transformation.
Main goals are:
- Developing a deep, direct knowledge of the site, up to an original interpretation of its actual condition and characters (buildings, open spaces, contextual determinations, environmental aspects, infrastructural connections).
- Listing landscape and environmental problems, as well as potentialities and opportunities in order to develop a strategical view.
Central expectations for this phase consist of:
- Detailed maps and diagrams of the existing conditions;
- Virtual 3d representation and physical models of the existing conditions;
- A critical photographic survey combined with maps and cross-sections drawings;
- A brief critical paper;
2. Program / Project Guidelines
The second part of the studio will consist of the definition of the program and the compilation of the design guidelines for the landscape project.
With the word "program" we do not refer just to a list of functions, which are just a part of the whole concept, but, more widely, we refer to the sum of choices and goals which inform the design actions and determine the morphological modification of the site.
The expected result for this phase consists of the elaboration of the program. This will pass through the production of a conspicuous dossier which displays the data collected in the first part of the work and formulates the guidelines for the following design phase.
This document is composed of:
- An individual, free and personal journal, displaying observations, notes, ideas, souvenirs, using mixed media and materials (texts, sketches, drawings, photos, collages, references, links).
- A roadmap and a well-ordered set of guidelines, both elaborated in teamwork, to orient the architectural project.
- A photographic collage or photomontage in form of a manifesto.
3: Landscape Design
The third and main phase will consist of the design of a new landscape. The results of the analysis of the existing conditions and the self-produced set of guidelines will offer the starting materials for the design process. During this phase, the class will also discuss reference projects /case studies, either contemporary or historical, to set some specific references for space, layout, environment, landscape forms and qualities.
Prerequisiti
"Landscape Design Studio 1" passed.
Modalità di valutazione
Since the studio is expected as a place where developing and sharing knowledge, it is highly welcome, encouraged and evaluated the active participation in the organization and development of the studio.
The final evaluation will be based on:
- The accuracy of the analysis phase;
- The significance of the program proposal;
- The quality of the landscape design;
- The awareness of the theoretical aspects and their application to the design proposal (lessons and references).
The final evaluation will be elaborated considering the success in these points and its motivations compared to the single goal expressed by Dublin's parameters (1-5).
Furthermore, It is considered fundamental being scientific and precise in each phase of the work, producing clear, correct and accurate drawings. They will not be evaluated incomplete exam submissions. Each design proposal should be provided by a complete set of technical drawings at the adequate scales, as well as virtual 3d views, renders, photomontages and physical models.
