Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The aim of the Studio is to experiment with the complexity of the design, from the idea to the realization, by acquiring knowledge about the ways of controlling the relationships between technological, energetic, environmental and structural aspects, and the experimentation and innovation paths of techniques, processes and how to design the project. The Studio aims to illustrate the cognitive, methodological, organizational and procedural tools in the different stages of the building process aimed at the constructability of complex new architectural interventions or the redevelopment of the existing one. Particular attention in the Design and Construction Studio is reserved for functional, constructive and environmental choices in relation to structural design and anti-seismic design criteria from the early stages of the project.

Expected learning outcomes are the ability to develop a feasibility and constructability project; in particular the design capacity of the constructive dimension, the constraints related to the environmental, physical, regulatory and cultural context in which the intervention is located, the ways of use; coordinated and interdisciplinary management of the technological, structural and energetic-environmental themes that form the project on the basis of priority requirements; anticipating decisions and evaluating the different technical options available today; application of the tools to support project decisions.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- ability to develop projects that are attentive to the constructive dimension, to the constraints related to the environmental, physical, normative and cultural context in which the intervention is located, to the usability and to the verification of the technical feasibility;

- ability to govern the complexity of the project, from the conceptual phase to the implementation phase.

 

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Cultural and disciplinary framework

The cultural, disciplinary and didactic conception of the Design and Construction Studio is outlined with reference to the communication and application of architectural and executive knowledge within the contemporary international and professional context. On these fundamentals, the didactic formulation of the Studio aims to teach and to pursue the distinguishing features of a training focused on the culture of the architectural engineering, on vocational training aimed at both project and building planning, and the necessary skills regarding both managing and processing of morpho-typological and functional, structural and executive contents. In this framework, the technical development of the project, considered and used as a tool for understanding, exploration and action, is carried out according to the synergistic combination between theory and practice.

 

Operational and application framework

The Design and Construction Studio will be carried out through the design layout characterized by:

  • the location of the project within a micro-urban area defined by infrastructural, spatial and fruition experience transformation;
  • the opportunities of morpho-typological, expressive and structural upgrading (aimed at an interactive, multifunctional and multi-user fruition experience);
  • the morpho-typological and functional upgrading procedures of external and internal spaces, according both to the needs (environmental, spatial, fruitive) of transformation of the destinations of use, both the legislative instruments, legal and regulatory context of the construction.

 

Themes for study and application

The thematic development takes place through three exercises focused on architectural and construction interventions of reduced dimensions, characterized by different levels of urban, architectural and executive complexity. Specifically, the three exercises concern:

  1. the study of a prefabricated construction system of small dimensions, defined by the use of mechanical construction techniques (developed through 4 technical drawings at A2 format);
  2. the study of an architectural organism defined by the use of both traditional and advanced construction techniques (developed through 4 technical drawings at A2 format);
  3. the study of an architectural building systems, component or joining device (developed through 2 technical drawings at A2 format).

 

Each of the three exercises includes the application development of these phases:

  • the morpho-typical, functional and technological and environmental study of the architectural organism (through the analysis of the concept design);
  • the study of the architectural and executive design methodologies, according to the teaching and use of international and professional typologies of technical drawings;
  • the study of the building systems, components and technical elements (in particular, focused on the structural and envelope/cladding technologies);
  • the study and application of the main building connections and joining procedures and devices.

 

Teaching methodology and evaluation procedures

The didactic activity of the Studio is established on a scientific teach & train method, where the teaching activities as a “guided” process in controlled conditions considering:

  • the combination of theoretical lectures and simultaneous applications;
  • the tutorial teaching by professors and collaborators with direct application (as inside an architectural atelier);
  • the application of the project and exercises (performed individually and not in groups) during the day and hours of the Studio, avoiding the work performed independently and avoiding the development of the through revisions.

Moreover, the teaching conception considers basic learning and preparation through the development of a personal “technical guide” characterized by notes and manual drawings related to the lectures and applications.

 

Exam

The development of the Studio, for the purposes of preparation for the examination, provides:

-   the constant development of the activity and the respect of the deliveries of the three exercises;

-   the completion of each exercise theme according to the deadlines indicated;

-   the evaluation (in thirtieths) of each exercise, so that the student can constitute his or her own "grade" during the teaching activity;

-   the oral exam, based on all the theoretical and applicative contents developed during the Studio.

Modalità di valutazione

The teaching methodology of the Studio provides for the regular assessment of the level of learning for each individual student. Consistency of the expected results of study with the educational programme (Excerpt from Form SUA-CDS - MIUR) are related to the table below which sums up the methods through which the various educational activities which the instructors include in the study programme contribute to achievement of the expected results, determined in accordance with the following 5 Dublin descriptors:

1. Knowledge and understanding;

2. Applying knowledge and understanding;

3. Making judgements;

4. Communication skills;

5. Learning skills.

This through the examination of the results related to the project applications: therefore, each student comes to the final examination with a synthetic evaluation due to the results achieved. The examination consists in checking learned contents on the basis of the applications.
