054456 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO
The goal of the Studio is the learning of the architectural design fundamentals, of the theoretical, analytical, historical and instrumental knowledge that allows getting to the design synthesis through the definition of architectural form, and to its representation through the drawing tool, expressive mode of the discipline. Student learns judgment and control of the quality of spaces and volumes in the different phases of the both historical-critical and spatial-compositional analysis, from conception to its formal definition, through the study of the relationship with site, urban history, functions, construction techniques and chosen materials.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
The student acquires practical skills through the performance of laboratory activities.
After passing the exam, the student: knows the fundamental principles, theories and concepts of architectural design; performs the experience of analysis of a building from its insertion in the historical urban context to the definition of construction and material details; demonstrates the ability to learn independently of critical judgment and the ability to communicate the design choices.
The teaching aims to the close coordination of the two disciplinary modules on a common exercise. The students are engaged in more than one architectural design experience that faces the complete analysis of architectural structures, developed with the tools that are necessary for the representation of the space (sketches, maquette, digital design) to detail scale, possibly with the design of a layout for its exhibition. The topic of the Studio is the analysis of several case studies of modern architecture, in the historical context of the city of Como, of their uses and of their relationships with the surrounding urban spaces. The Studio work takes place in the classroom. It is organized with lectures, practice and workshop activities, with regular reviews of the exercise, developed in international teams of four students. Lectures and practices are set to frame the problematic and disciplinary aspects of architecture, studying the rules of the urban form, showing case studies and related typologies to stimulate and support the design analysis in the various phases of setting and development. The teaching program of History of Architectural Heritage introduce students to the comparison of Italian case studies, related to the history of the city and to the urban landscape. The lectures will be focused on the analysis of modern buildings and urban spaces, with a special point of view about some of the greatest masters of the Italian Rationalist architecture. The program includes a study trip to the site of the case studies and a Final Day that will present the results of the twin Studio sections.
The pre-requisites for the attendance of the teaching are those of the experience of the analysis of several building complexes on an urban scale and the study of forms of insertion into the urban fabric of historical matrix, acquired through the achievement of the bachelor in architecture. A prerequisite is also the ability to work in a multi-person and multi-cultural design group.
Modalità di valutazione
The practical and operative work of analysis will be carried out in teams of four international students, and will be subjected to reviews in classroom, where the presence is mandatory. Timing and modalities will be explained in a timetable that will be presented the first day of the course. The student must show the ability to organize the discourse of knowledge and to critically discuss the results of the exercise in team with competence and clarity. These checks are an essential pre-requisite for the final evaluation, whose admission is allowed only for the enrolled students who have regularly attended the Studio, with the positive evaluation of all the deliveries assigned during the semester. The exam consists of an individual oral exam, with the presentation and the discussion of five quaderns (A3 format, one for each case study, with the contents intertwined between the two teachings), where the student has to demonstrate the ability to communicate in an organized way the theoretical and methodological contents examinated, the ability of presenting in a critical way the case studies carried out during the work in team, with a good quality of explanation and an adequate knowledge of the fundamentals of the discipline.
