The course aims at making PhD students aware of the mechanics of writing in English to clearly communicate their ideas in academic settings; moreover, the course will provide an overview of English phonetics to maximize the effect of the students’ oral presentations.
Detailed Programme 1) Writing in your L1 vs writing in English; overview of academic genres (reports, essays, research papers and dissertations); the writing process; writing an outline. 2) Basic text units (phrases, clauses, sentences, paragraphs); SVO sentence structure, end-weight principle, active vs passive verb forms; verb patterns. 3) Connecting text units correctly and effectively; use of punctuation; how to choose the appropriate linking words; how to achieve sentence variety. 4) Classroom practice: Turning an outline into a cohesive and coherent piece of writing. 5) Working on lexis: Idioms and phrasal verbs; class shift; avoiding gender connotation; spelling conventions. 6) Applying hedging strategies to sound reliable; avoiding wordiness and dangling modifiers. 7) Classroom practice: Troubleshooting 8) Abstract writing workshop 9) Phonetics for effective oral presentations (part 1) 10) Phonetics for effective oral presentations (part 2)

Students will write an essay describing their research project and will then comment on their essay based on the feedback provided by the lecturer.
