Fragility of materials and structures

The need to preserve the architectural heritage is strictly connected to the need to inspect the structural safety standards while identifying, when deemed necessary, suitable upgrade interventions. Due to the peculiarity of the national territory, today’s Italian regulations prescribe that global safety be also inspected for the effects of seismic events, in addition to the static effects deriving from long-term loads. To the purpose of safety verifications, a variety of analysis tools have been developed and codified through time, involving different complexity levels. A critical view of the different procedures is given in the course; attention is mainly focused on the specific issue of interventions on the archeological built heritage.

Studies and investigations are also extended to materials and methods for conservation works on architectural surfaces. This topic is mainly discussed with reference to archeometry and its role in conservation science.

  6. Mortars in Historic Buildings. Composition and technology issues influencing a fragile material - Antonio Sansonetti

  7. Mitigation of the historical masonry fragility: mission impossible ? - Antonella Saisi

  8. Fragility of churches: earthquake effects - Stefano Podestà

  9. Strengthening criteria and techniques for historical masonry – Maria Rosa Valluzzi

  10. Seismic damage modalities in towers and bell towers  – Massimiliano Bocciarelli

 

Expected results: basic knowledge of masonry mechanical properties, vulnerability analysis, rehabilitation intervention criteria
