Background about digital maps: geographic and mapping reference systems, types of geo-spatial data 2D raster maps, 3D topographic data bases, orthoimages, digital terrain/surface models), digital terrain/surface/elevation models (2 hours- Prof. Luigi Fregonese). Data sources of digital cartography and geo-spatial data and the international standards, e.g., the INSPIRE directive, OGC and open-data principles (2 hours - Prof. Luigi Fregonese). Technical instruments to handle digital maps and spatial data (commercial and open source desktop/web GIS, geo-portals, integration BIM/GIS (3 hours lab - Prof. Luigi Fregonese). Formalization of technological interdependence in urban economics: the spatial weight matrix and measurement and visualization of spatial autocorrelation patterns (3 hours lab - Dr. Andrea Caragliu). An introduction to econometrics and spatial econometrics (2 hours lab - Dr. Andrea Caragliu). An overview of environmental and energy mapping at the urban scale using different tools and techniques; introduction to the production of urban digital models and models reconstruction using different data sources; the analysis of urban form for the production of visual information (maps) and numerical information (quantifications and indicators); among others: mapping solar accessibility and solar energy potential; estimation of urban energy demand; urban thermal comfort maps and urban heat island mapping (6 hours lab - Dr. Eugenio Morello). Analyse the development of cities and settlements through maps, both historical and digital. Representation of built environment through cartographical design. Identify different narratives generated by different types of maps. Understanding of spatial data analysis as foundation for design (5 hours - Prof. Pilar Maria Guerrieri). An overview on a system mapping process as visual description of the organization of the city, seen as a Complex Adaptive System, with the different components involved, their mutual links and the flows through the system. (5 hours - Prof. Massimo Tadi).

Learning evaluation will be based on: (a) frequency and active participation in the classes; (b) presentation and discussion of the project developed within the lab; (c) writing a book chapter describing and illustrating in a graphical and communicative way the results of the lab project.

Calendario testuale dell'attività didattica

The course is organized in two parts. The first part includes a series of Lectures and Lab activities (28 hours overall) aimed at providing students with some background concepts and at training in the use of software tools. In the second (7 hours overall) a lab activity will be developed, where students will be involved in the development of a case study. This case study may be provided by the student him/herself on the basis of her PhD research topic, or alternatively proposed by the teaching staff. The course will be completed by an open seminar where projects developed within the lab sessions will be presented and discussed.
