BASIC MISSION AND TRAINING GOALS

The course aims at presenting the basic aspects of the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of soil and soil-like materials. Various practical problems in the field of geotechnical engineering will be considered and discussed, concerning

  • excavation in urban area and soil improvement
  • construction of buildings and transformation of existing structures
  • consevation of architectural heritage, etc.  

MAIN SUBJECTS AND PROGRAMME OF THE COURSE 

1) Experimental methods in geotechnical engineering (Aims of geotechnical testing and monitoring. Laboratory and in situ testing techniques, small scale models, monitoring during construction. Review of standard testing procedures. Computer controlled equipment and data acquisition systems. Interpretation of experimental data and field measurements. Programming site investigation, monitoring, laboratory and in situ tests: choice of the measurement techniques, location of the measuring points, etc. Quality control and data certification).

2) Shallow and deep foundations (Bearing capacity and settlement analysis of shallow foundations. Load capacity of piles and pile groups. Planning of geotechnical investigations. Evaluation of soil/rock properties from field and laboratory test data. Content of the report prepared for the design of geotechnical structures and for reference during the construction stage).

3) Open cuts and underground excavation in urban area (Comments on the soil-structure interaction. Gravity walls. Sheet pile walls. Temporary and permanent support in underground excavation. Field monitoring of excavation-induced settlements).

4) Damage to buildings due to subsidence, etc. Soil improvement and underpinning of existing structures (Design oriented case studies and case histories).

5) Numerical modelling in geotechnical engineering (Constitutive modelling of nonlinear and time-dependent behaviour of soils and rocks. Application of the finite element method to some geotechnical problems: confined and unconfined flow; two-phase porous and deformable media, coupled approach to consolidation; stability of slopes in static and dynamic conditions; underground excavations; soil-structure interaction etc.)

The students will be required to submit a short report on an assigned topic.
