Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the defined general learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities:

  • Identify trends, technologies and key methodologies in the Supply Chain Management specific domain

  • Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modeling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face SCM problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment

  • Interact in a professional, responsible, effective and constructive way in a working environment, also motivating group members

Having completed this course the student is expected to show an ability to:

  1. identify trends: the students will be able to analyse the impact of ICT over Supply Chain decisions, at the same time the students will be able to understand which changes in terms of SM strategies has to be performed to react to a couninuosly changing competitive landscape
  2. design: the students will be able to design a SCM strategy according to the Corporate strategy priorities. The students will be able to design the global structure of the SC (performing make or buy decisions, localization decisions, capacity sizing decisions)
  3. interact: the students will be able to deal with professional of different disciplinary areas, highlighting the SCM issues and identifying the impacts of external decisions on the SC perfrormances

OVERALL COURSE BACKGROUND AND AIMS

 

Supply chain management (SCM) is an increasingly important and popular function in private and public sector organizations in both manufacturing and service sectors. SCM has strong roots in the more established business functions of logistics and purchasing but is a more holistic concept that spans both internal functions and external business partners, taking in upstream suppliers and downstream distributors and customers. SCM includes the key processes of sourcing, manufacturing, delivering and returning. Therefore at the beginning of the course SCM strategis, reltaionships with NPD, Purchasing and Planning will be addressed.
Then the focus will shift from SCM to global supply networks  The rationale for this change in focus is the increasing realization that supply chains are not simple linear structures but complex inter-organizational networks with a global span. This reality has been caused by extensive use of global (out-)sourcing strategies across industries and presents organizations with new complexities, risks and opportunities. Where in the past SCM professionals required mostly technical skills and competencies, there is now a need for a more strategic approach and new skill and knowledge sets. The Supply Chain Management course, therefore, focuses distinctly not only on technical and operational tools and techniques but also on the behavioural or soft skills and competencies that are required for the management of supply relationships, chain and networks.
  1. Understand the role of SCM in organizations and in their relationships with suppliers and customers
  2. Define overall SCM concepts
  3. Understand the relationships between new product development and SC Design
  4. Explore supply chain planning and control techniques
  5. Assess the use and relevance of information and communication technologies in SCM
  6. Explain the meaning and importance of SCM strategy
  7. Apply concepts and techniques of lean and agile supply chains
  8. Apply supply chain and network mapping techniques
  9. Design appropriate supply network types and configurations depending on different product and market situations
  10. Explore and understand the drivers and processes of global SCM
  11. Critically evaluate current trends in global sourcing, backshoring and reshoring
  12. Evaluate and classify different types of supply network risk and the role of resilience
  13. Explore the concept of service-based supply chains and challenges of buying logistics services
  14. Evaluate ethical and sustainability challenges in global supply network
  15. Assess the relevance and challenges of sustainable SCM, especially in terms of potential environmental and ethical risks in the extended supply chain

Basic concepts of Logistcs, Operations Management, Marekting and Strategy

Final assessment: grade will be the result of:

  1. individual exam (Written and/or oral)
  2. group assignment
