The course aims to give the student the knowledge to master the engineering tools used for the design and development of a machine tools digital twin, and to illustrate the use cases of the digital twin inside the value chain process.
Through a project work the student will have the possibility to make experience with the tools and the project techniques during the development of the machine.

Lectures will allow the student to:
know the general concepts of the digital twin, the concerning added value and the different levels of implementations (DdD1)
know the basic CNC and PLC structure (DdD1)
identify variables and boundaries of the simulated system (DdD2, DdD3)
know the tools suitable for the development of a digital twin (DdD1)
estimate the requested resources for the design of a digital twin of a real machine (DdD2, DdD3)
The project laboratory will allow students to:
get experience whit the simulation software (DdD3 and DdD5)
get experience whit the development of the digital twin of a machine tools (DdD2, DdD4 and DdD5), including
identification on the real system of the fundamental variables and constrains
virtualization of the field components
adjustment of the 3D CAD model and its transformation from static to dynamic
presentation of project results

Machine safety concepts and main functionalities
Introduction to the various digital twin levels
Detailed study of the “Software in the Loop” virtual commissioning model and the needed tools:
“Create My Virtual Machine” – Software for CNC and PLC simulation
“Simit” – Software for field equipment simulation
“NX Mechatronic Concept Designer” – Software for creation of dynamic 3D models
Digital Twin with machining simulation in NX-CAM
A project laboratory is integral part of the course. The objective of the projects is to help students to apply the approaches and principles discussed during the lectures.
Students are required to have a basic knowledge about:
Machine tools concepts
ISO programming concepts
Modalità di valutazione
The assessment will be divided in:
A written exam: multiple choice test based on the theoretical topics explained during the lectures to check the acquisition of knowledge and understanding (DdD1).
Oral session: students will present and discuss the project result (DdD4). The project goal will be defined during the course. The project achievements will be assessed to check the achievement of learning objectives related to applying knowledge and understanding (DdD2), making judgement (DdD3) and learning skills (DdD5).
