Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio concludes the training course and addresses the question of the architectural project and the intervention on the physical environment in various disciplinary areas, in line with the didactic contents of the Course of Study.

In the Studio, in which different disciplines are integrated, the students are asked to prepare a complex and innovative project through the tools of architecture and urban design, having mastered the feasibility of the project.

Students:

- acquire knowledge and understanding skills to design in complex and problematic contexts that require non-standardized and homologated solutions, but instead imply the search for innovative solutions;

- are capable of using the knowledge acquired to describe and interpret the settlement phenomena and address the complex problems of architecture, cities and territories;

- are capable of elaborating, conceiving and implementing the architectural project in various thematic areas;

- are capable of formulating and solving the problems of the different intervention scales in an innovative way.


Argomenti trattati

The workshop is focused on the possibility of reconsidering a new urban strategy for the small-medium towns that moves from the historical analysis of the context, both territorial both urban.

 The strategy adopted allowed to set a critical approach, able to express the potential of the small central dismissed areas in the process of regeneration and redevelopment of the city and its urban, architectural and social settings, opposed to the increasing instances of delocalisation and uncontrolled consumption of land. 

 In the current situation, this workshop challenges the priority of a strategic vision that overcomes the conventional aspects of planning and, optimizing the resources represented by the existing context, could represent a possible concrete prospect for other cities.

 Case studies:

 Prague (CZECH REPUBLIC) The workshop proposes a design theme regarding the consolidation of one of the cultural systems of Prague around the "citadel" of the legendary ghetto.It considers the central tissue of Stare Mesto, outlined in the ideal triangulation that from Staromestske Namesti spread the vertices represented by Sv Mikulas, Rudolfinum and Klaster Sv Anezky Ceske.

The theme proposed covers the rehabilitation of the area around Klaster Sv Anezky Ceske, founded in 1234, currently museum of Czech painting and sculpture. The program includes the project of a museum, articulated through the return of the typological structure of the cloistered convent, in support of existing exhibition, and deployment of a new structure for the Ghetto Memorial Museum of the ancient city, in the adjacent area between the street Kozi, u Milosrdnych and na Frantisku, near the river Vltava.

 Fidenza (ITALY). Another case-study proposed is represented by the city of Fidenza and its territory included in the basin of the Po valley, beside the Via Emilia, with the purpose of showing a possible different approach to the theme of urban regeneration.

 In this evolving framework, which is the basis for all other economic activity in the surrounding territory, as part of a Food-Valley articulated around the axis of the Via Emilia, Fidenza has the right size to become a catalyst for issues related to the food industry, as a producer of knowledge and diffuser of communication.

 In the same way, the ancient relationship with the inner centre of Salsomaggiore and its thermal system, could represent a starting point to think in a different way about the theme of hospitality, service and activities related to body care and well-being, in order to consolidate the construction of a "City of Health", based on territorial relations.

 Aleppo (SYRIA). The last case-study is the city of Aleppo. The intent here proposed is to investigate some reconstruction techniques starting from certain practices that in the literary field have been experimentally assumed when, for example, writing work "allows more easily to find operationally a solution to the eternal problem of the relationship between historicity and universality of literary texts, their functional belonging to a precise historical system of communication and, at the same time, to a broader, and also historical, system of aesthetic values ​​". 

With this approach, the survey tries to bring into the architectural field not so much the literary techniques but rather of the experimental procedures that engage in those rewriting modalities redeem that microcosm of the otherwise neglected and abandoned linguistic gap, and bring back the sense of an ideological choice. , with more certain evidence, in every material detail, for a historical transformation, of an aesthetic and literary image. Differently, therefore, from the literature in architecture, rewriting means not only recombining but from the beginning recomposing the basic semantic structures recognizable as invariants in the general structure of the city.
The rewriting is, therefore, the possibility of decomposing and recomposing not the elements of the language that substantiates the literature, but sequences already given of those elements, original configurations with a strong identity, extrapolated from the original context and inserted into new narrative mechanisms to be combined with the original elements and to confirm new semantic structures.

Modalità di valutazione

Teaching format.

The workshop consists of lectures and communications on specific design themes and application contexts. In the first phase, the activity of workshop will be concentrated on the correct interpretation of the application ambits, proposed to the students by the recognition (also by the inspections) of the specific contest features.

At this stage, some lectures are provided with regard to the definition of the design theme.

These communications will be supported by some design experience, considered paradigmatic in the experience of modern and contemporary architecture.

In the second phase, the workshop activities will take place through individual and collective adjustments of project proposals for students and, if necessary, through specific communications provided for the progress of the project.

Examination procedures. The exam consists of a theoretical discussion about the project conceived during the workshop
