Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Music production technologies are in constant evolution, but they all share common features of data organization, visualization, responsivity, etc. In past few years, technology innovation has had a great impact on music production. For this reason, in order to be able to research and implement technological solutions for the music industry, it is important to develop a solid knowledge on the music production process.
This Module will offer a practical overview of the music production process with specific focus on its technical implementation, with reference to three specific case studies: Record Productions; Soundtrack Production; and Production of Functional Music.

Students will be able to acquire an overview of the music production process with specific reference to its technical implementation, and will do so through a mix of lectures and direct in-studio experience. The course will cover various topics with reference to three specific case studies: Record Productions; Soundtrack Production; and Production of Functional Music (advertisement, ambient sounds, etc.), but it will also address issues that are typical of live production. Students will learn such topics through the development of specific projects.


Argomenti trattati

This module discusses the music production techniques with specific reference to the above three case studies. For each one of them, it covers:

  • Recording Studio Design
  • Audio systems fundamentals: analog vs. digital, multitrack recording, signal processing, large-format digital consoles, console vs. controller, recording platform, I/O and DSP comparison, audio cabling (signal types and cable runs, signal flow)
  • Recording studios: types, layouts
  • Monitoring: overview, types (in-wall, mid-field, subwoofer, nearfield), amplification
  • Engines, clock/synchronization, etc.
  • Digital Audio Workstation - overview, structure and organization, workflow
  • The recording chain
  • Microphones: specifications; types (inside, condenser, moving coil, ribbon, etc.); signal transmission; preamplifiers; setup; placement
  • Recording techniques: stereo pair; X/Y and spaced pair; drum set, piano, voice, stringed instrument, etc. recording;
  • Mixing - setup (organization, ergonomics, and phase relationships); equalization; reverb and delays; automation; dynamics processing; vocal, drums, and instrumental mixing.
  • Mastering - monitoring; audio file editing and noise reduction; equalization; dynamics processing; serial, parallel and multiband processing; compression techniques; control and balance of stereo image; stereo L-R vs M-S processing; use of reverb and harmonic enhancers; limiters and levels for CD and streaming platforms; loudness, LUFS and dBs; dithering.

Prerequisiti

This Course has no specific pre-requisites, but it is recommended to attend it after having already taken courses such as "Computer Music Representations and Models" and "Computer Music Languages and Systems"


Modalità di valutazione

Students will be asked to work on a music production project in "flipped classroom" modality, which they will then be asked to present in class at the end of the course. The final evaluation will take into account the quality of the project, its presentation, as well as on attendence and participation.
