In this Studio, the student explores into the topics that characterize and are coherent with the contents of the study course through transdisciplinary experiences. This experience aims at developing knowledge and understanding on how to effectively enhance the building heritage, the landscape and the environment as resources, with specific attention to the problems of the modification and regeneration of the built environment and of consolidated urban and settlement systems.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- ability to apply appropriate techniques to transform, operating at different scales, the inhabited space in its multiple configurations: morphological and typological, ecological and environmental, economic and social, anthropological and cultural.
DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)
- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).
The aim of the studio is the analysis of the historic buildings that characterize the Italian villages located in the seismic zone, their functioning, the adopted anti-seismic solutions and the response offered over time. The work starts from the analysis of one or more small historical centres, consolidated and damaged again after two earthquakes, in 1997 and 2016, in order to understand their intrinsic delicacy, seismic vulnerability and their behaviour during the earthquake. The idea is to propose a diagnostics project, according to different levels of knowledge, a structural consolidation and restoration design. The case studies start from isolated buildings to complex aggregate buildings and severely damaged ones, trying to understand which final image to return, which function to attribute, in relation to the entire village. The structural analyses aimed to seismic evaluation will be carried out, according to recent legislation, before and after the designed intervention, based on the possible collapse mechanisms. The choice of innovative intervention techniques is more and more directed towards materials compatible with traditional ones, both from a chemical and physical and structural point of view, involving in a broad sense the various disciplines that collaborate in this studio.
The course is so structured:
1st part: depending on the previous knowledge of the students, the first part of the course will be devoted to give an overview of the main themes, that will be applied in the second part of the course. These will comprise:
For the “Preservation” modulus (G. Cardani); 1) some basic input of conservation principles of historic centers and vernacular buildings; 2) survey and analysis of the typical structural elements (walls, arches, vaults, floors, roofs); 3) mechanical behaviour, recurrent damages and collapse mechanisms in seismic areas of single masonry buildings and of buildings aggregates in historic centers; 4) diagnostic investigation aimed to improve the knowledge of the vernacular buildings; 5) main intervention techniques for strengthening masonry constructions.
For the “Structural Design” modulus (L. Martinelli): 1) General layout of masonry buildings to resist horizontal and vertical loads. 2) Seismic response of masonry building aggregates. 3) Seismic design codes and seismic evaluation of a building, 4) Definition of the seismic action. 5) Design and verification of new floor systems and historic ones. 6) Assessment of retrofitting interventions.
For the “Building Materials” modulus (C. Cristiani): 1) History and evolution of the building materials with particular attention to those applied in the area of interest; 2) Materials properties and their determination; 3) Brief introduction to materials characterization; 3) Materials physico-chemical nature and materials compatibility; 4) Use of innovative materials for consolidation of historical structures.
Both characterization of historical and modern materials will be considered in the form of short seminars, workshops delivered by well-known practitioners in the field, and simple practical experiments.
2nd part: the 3 courses will help the students in their preservation project working on a real case study: the historic center of Castelluccio di Norcia, heavily hit by the strong earthquake of 30th October 2016. The village takes place in one of the most beautiful mountain areas of Umbria region and it still has all the buildings damaged and collapsed still in their place. Thanks to past surveys, it will be possible to analyze the current situation and plan new strategies for the rebirth of the village. Through graphic works, texts and workshop, the student's ability to make a preliminary cognitive path to the project related to the chosen case study will be verified.
Modalità di valutazione
It is suggested that students have already some basic information on the topic of restoration and conservation of historic buildings to better understand the topics presented during this course. Moreover, basic fundamentals of chemistry and physic will help the student to go deeper in the course topics, manly for “Building Materials” modulus.
The expected learning outcomes will relate to learn how to deal with small masonry buildings in historic centers in seismic areas, affected by transformations over centuries, following the different and growing needs of the inhabitants, repaired after damages due to earthquakes and strictly connected with other historic buildings forming complex aggregates. The students at the end of the course should be more aware in rethinking the refurbishment of an historic building balancing the modern needs and the conservation and structural needs. At the end of the course students will be also able to interact with all the stakeholders of the process such as prescribers, local authorities, material scientists, and restoration technicians.
The course has mandatory attendance.
A written examination with open questions will be carried out for the theoretical lessons. In case of insufficient evaluation, the student will be given the opportunity to recuperate with an oral exam.
For the design part, some evaluation during the course will be carried out at the end of each step with singular note.
Also evaluation on the practical part in form of reports or presentation will be part of the final evaluation.
The final examination will focus on the discussion of the project and the final grade will be the average of the different evaluation methods.
During the course, for selected cases, the students will develop a reuse and retrofitting project; this part will cover ideally more than 50% of the work performed by the students within the course. At the end of the studio, the material produced can be used as a starting base for the development of graduation theses.
All references will be given during the course, according to the previous knowledge of the attendants and according to the work done step by step.

The projects carried out during the workshop may be the subject of a master's thesis, but they will obviously require an additional part of work.
The professors are available for any master's thesis on topics other than those carried out during the Final Thesis Studio but still in the general theme of the course and of individual modules.
In addition, the professors are available, even individually, for thesis in collaboration with other professors outside Final Thesis Studio.
